    Accident with my laptop

So I was carrying my laptop in the same bag as a can of soda(I've done this so many times that the obvious bad outcome thought didn't even cross my mind anymore) which did in fact somehow manage to open while in my bag. Long story short my laptop got a little wet, so I wanted to ask you guys what would you advise doing to at least attempt to save it? I have the battery out and both in front of a fan right now, and I do have a warranty, but I'd rather just save it and not have to deal with any of that if possible. Also, before you all go calling me an idiot for carrying a drink + something like a laptop in the same bag, I accept the fact that I made a terrible decision, and it was very dumb of me. :/ Any suggestions are more than welcome at this point >.>

what kind of laptop is it? Dell and HP will most likely honor the warranty as long as you do not say you spilled soda, do you have accidental coverage? both HP and Dell offer it and chances are it comes included if you extended your default 1 year warranty to 3 or so. If you are unsure, call HP or Dell, inform them you care about your laptop and want to add accidental warranty. It should not cost much (depends) and wait 2 weeks or so and make a report. If it is just the keyboard that is damaged/sticky, it is covered under warranty and you do not have to ship it back.

also, use the warranty. It does not expire just because you make 1, 2, 3, 100 claims.

It's a Dell XPS, and I do believe I got the 3 year warranty, so if drying it out before using it again doesn't work I might just file a claim.

I sent back a laptop to dell depot that a customer vomited in. a week later, he had a new notebook. How they managed not to notice the corn is beyond me...

Laptops are sealed pretty tight, unless a huge amount of liquid slipped through the openings of the heatsink, you should be fine. You should be paying close attention to the LCD as it is easy for those to become damaged due to liquid. If you have 3 year warranty, you should be okay as far as accidental. go to support.dell.com and lookup your warranty by typing in your service tag.

Have you turned it on yet? Most computer components are actually fine if they get wet.... it's when you combine that with electricity that you end up frying things. If the computer was completely off and you clean out all the soda from it (I'm talking every drop, even a little bit left behind or if the sugar caramelizes can cause problems) you should be fine. Those laptops come apart very easily, if you're comfortable with it, open it up and clean up everything. The Dell XPS's come with a special warranty with their own tech support line, so if you end up having problems give them a call. They'll either repair the components or ship you a new (refurbished) laptop.

also, if you spilled a diet soda you're in pretty good shape too. since diet soda lacks the sugar of a regular soda, you're not under threat from the sugar solidifying and sticking to the insides, nor will the keys become sticky. if it is a regular soda, this is one thing you will need to be careful to ensure you clean up thoroughly or the little scissors under the keys will become extremely sticky and start binding as you type. having seen some pretty brutal laptop injuries in my days (i've worked at not one, but TWO laptop helldesks at schools and i've seen everything from beer drenched computers to laptops that had been run over.) i'd say your situation is probably a lot less dire than you think. take some time, take some care, and you should have your computer up and running again as if nothing happened.
