Those are amazing bands. I've loved Ulver's entire career, and I'm a huge fan of everything Anathema have done.

Anything Rygg puts his name on, I'll listen to, and the majority of it is incredible. Honestly, I stopped listening to Anathema after Judgment, not sure why, but everything I've ever listened to I thought was great, Pentecost III just sticks out in my mind over everything else.

The newer Anathema is definitely a departure. They really did great things with doom, along with My Dying Bride. It's hard to keep to a doom style though as in the 90s there was only so much to do with it. Now you have bands like Sunn O))) that have take it to a whole different level.

Also, I forgot to mention perhaps one of the most innovative, original, and genius (death) metal bands - Demilich.

Finnish band that released 1 album in 1993. They have it posted on their website for free (Necropolis Records folded, so they can). It's a mixture of jazz, death metal, doom, and just absolutely, completely insane vocals. The main guy is awesome, and is now doing a new band in the same style, but more progressive/less death metal.

Downloading now, thank you. Back to your comment about doom metal being forced to change, I completely agree. I did like old My Dying Bride a lot, but I think the lines blurred between gothic and doom metal, which caused bands like SunnO))) and Khanate to get publicity. Can't say I can complain too much though, I personally think Khanate is the most ingenious band that existed besides Neurosis or Ulver. Reason being; there is not another band out there that will make you feel the level of desperation or loneliness that Khanate does.

Haven't heard Back When or Bossk, but every other band on this list is amazing.

I'm not sure if it came from somewhere else originally, but it's the cover to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's f#a#-infinity.

If you dig Agalloch, check out the first few Ulver releases up thru Nattens Madrigal. I guess the influence isn't quite as apparent on Ashes, but their first two albums (especially Pale Folklore) borrow pretty heavily from Ulver's early material.

famine, I can only add one name to your doom metal list: Sleep...oh and Asunder is pretty sweet too.

Storm & Stress is alright. I've only heard their Sin album and dug the hell out of it.

It's not metal, but Cold as Life was my favorite hardcore band back when I was 16.

Fall of Efrafa take a lot of influence from both punk and metal and blends them epically! Nux Vomica & Wake Up On Fire are in the same boat (if you like this stuff I have TONS of bands to rattle off).

For fun some "fantasy/viking metal" (think Dragonforce)
