Swano is a pretty accomplished guy, but I can't get into most of the projects he's been involved in. Diabolical Masquerade is the real standout IMO, although if memory serves, Anders Nystrom/Blackheim from Katatonia was the principal songwriter on all of the albums, iirc Swano just did some electronics and drums here and there, along with producing.

You know at first I thought the new Lamb of god album was terrible too. I'm sure if you gave it a few run throughs you'd like it more. It might just sound different from what you're used to. :\

Or maybe they sobered up and went the way of Metallica.

Never followed them too closely, but in the case of DEP, I believe they have one original member left. Probably just a case of all the talent moving on.

What was their newest one, Ire Works? I remember giving it a try a while back and it was just awful. Last thing I listened to by them before that was the Irony EP, which was awesome. Man what a contrast between those two, lol.

The one person I know that likes Psyopus has terrible taste in music, so I've never listened to them to be honest. I actually rather enjoyed Ire Works, it was pop music, wasn't really what I'd look for in a DEP album, but goddamn the hooks got stuck in my head.

Swano had a hand in "Nightwork" and "Death's Design" (writing solos), but with the rest it was just playing instruments. He did give the albums that Unisound/Sanctuary touch he's given so many bands.

One of the best Swano projects was Steel with Mikael, Anders Nordin (how I miss his drumming), and Peter during Opeth's "Morningrise" recording sessions:

Mnemic was awesome before they got a new lead singer. We hung out with them on one of their US tours, back around the time The Audio Injected Soul came out. They're all cool as shit, the bassist and the old singer were hanging out with me and a couple buddies before the show started. Mechanical Spin Phenomena is still one of my favorite albums in that type of metal.

If you dig Agalloch, check out the first few Ulver releases up thru Nattens Madrigal. I guess the influence isn't quite as apparent on Ashes, but their first two albums (especially Pale Folklore) borrow pretty heavily from Ulver's early material.
I googled and it appears the cover art is their own original stuff.

I'll have to check out Ulver, my ladyfriend has mentioned them a few times, but I never really made a point to listen to it.

I'm am shocked and outraged at the lack of mention of grammy winning artists Jethro Tull.

But seriously, I think I'm getting too old. I can't stand most of the metal put out these days. Too much screaming, or a bit too heavy for me, I guess. Do any of these newer bands have more of an 80s metal feel to them? Something like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden as a reference.

Three Inches of Blood have a pretty '80s feel to them, with the whole falsetto and chugging/harmony guitars thing. Bit more "modern" though with the screaming.

Oh, and Dream Evil are very consciously cheezily '80s. The opening 3 seconds of this song pretty much say it all.

Thick As A Brick is so heavy... just look at the title of the song. Could be a Strapping Young Lad song easily.
