HDD recovery programs

Was going to grab my old HDD when I got home today and try to recover a .txt file I have on there (That I had written down on paper, but lost the piece of paper). Can anyone recommend any good programs? Last time I tried to get it to work, only 1 particular prog worked (which I can't remember it's name) and it required you to purchase quota to make transfers (and they had 1 mb trial quota, which I wasted just on testing to see if the prog worked)

whats wrong with the drive? have you tried hooking it up as a secondary and just grabbing the file off of it?

It kinda crapped out on me, which is why I have to switch. Windows recognizes it when I plug it in with a USB enclosure, but it doesn't show up under my computer as a drive i can add/take to/from.

you want to use the "find lost drive option" (the busted drive needs to be hooked up as a secondary and recognized by windows as you said it is).

"Use this option if your drive letter is not showing up in Windows Explorer or My Computer. It will attempt to connect to the drive and if successful, allow you to browse the data."

It's odd that the drive died on you like that. I'd try to run SpinRite on it to try and salvage it, and in the process save the drive and data.

If you want a good recovery program, I do recommend R-studio's data recovery program. But I normally find SpinRite saves the day more successfully than a data recovery program, but if you just need a tiny file it's probably more your speed.

1st link was a no go. I found the one I had before, and it partially worked. Brought up a little data, but in the 10 gigs of the 80 i could bring up in my attempt, the file I needed wasn't there. What pretty much happened is I had my registration codes for ffxi backed up on my HDD and my friend was borrowing my ffxi discs to install, the instruction book being inside the CD case. He had them for a few months because I never bothered to go over and pick them up since I didn't need the discs. After my HDD crashed, I found out he lost my booklet with my reg codes so yea lol

no go. For each, pauses during the scan (I guess that's where its' damaged). So I end up having to cancel or it just stands there all night. That being said, I can get some data back, but between all the programs, haven't been able to get to the file I've been looking for.

You gave SpinRite a go? I'd do a level 4 (or is it 2? The deep scan/recovery), it should take hours

I couldn't get it to work at all. Said my drive wasn't removable storage and wouldn't go on my drive.

If it ever becomes feasible, connect it straight to a mobo (ide/sata) and see. SpinRite would have better access (including SMART access). Sorry to hear it's been no dice so far.

Spinrite should work if you can connect it to the mobo, as stated. It's one nice program.
