    Splitting HDMI to DVI/RCA

    I looked around online, but didn't find anything yet. Is there such a splitter that allows you to:

    Code:
                                   DVI (video) ----->
                                  /
    ---- HDMI (video and audio) ->
                                  \
                                   RCA (audio) ----->
    What I really want is HDMI (video/audio) -> HDMI (just video) / RCA (just audio), but I imagine if anything exists like that, it's more likely to split into DVI/RCA. I could just use an adapter to get back to HDMI after that, if I need to.

    RCA is analog, so no it's not going to happen without a converter box.

    You can split the audio from HDMI, but only to digital. Read: NOT RCA.

    Let's look at this a different way though, what exactly are you trying to do? What device to what devices?

    Well, I have a TV with one HDMI input, and a laptop that has a DVI output, and a cable box with HDMI output.

    I can't use a switchbox unless there's one out there that accepts DVI/RCA input as well as HDMI input, and has HDMI output.

    The TV has an HDMI input as well as RCA inputs. When the cable box is hooked up, the audio source is selected as "Digital HD" which makes it look for the audio via the HDMI connection.

    When the laptop is hooked up, I change the audio source to "DVI" which makes it use the RCA for audio (while still using the HDMI for video). The laptop is hooked up with DVI-out from the laptop connected via HDMI adapter to the HDMI cable that goes to the TV. RCA cables connect the headphone-out from the laptop to the TV.

    So whenever I want to switch between cable and the laptop, I get up and disconnect the HDMI cable from the laptop, and plug it into the cable box, and then select the sound source on the TV from "DVI" back to "Digital HD". And vice versa when going back to the laptop.

    What I want to do is use a switch box to leave both the laptop and cable box connected and switch effortlessly between them. The best I can do right now is to hook up the RCA from the laptop to the TV, and the HDMI from the laptop and cable box to a switch box, and then to the TV. Then use the switchbox to switch between them, and then change the audio source on the TV. Instead, I'm trying to eliminate the audio source selection step and just be able to switch between cable box and laptop in one step.

    Just for info, my laptop has s/pdif-out via an s-video dongle... although I'm not too sure how you get an audio signal out of s-video, but that's what the documentation says. If it helps.

    Do this. You'll have to switch audios. You should get a receiver.

    Thanks, but what about a way that doesn't require me to switch audio sources each time?If I could get both the box and the laptop to hook into the tv the same way, it might be possible. e.g. use RCA audio for both, or audio through HDMI on both. Is there a converter that will accept DVI or HDMI video plus RCA audio and convert it to one HDMI signal?

    Like I said, get a receiver. Or half a dozen switchiepoo boxes if you want.
