they don't really "eat you alive" and, you're going to have to trust me here, but there are worse things to have.

Breaking apart your arteries or other major blood areas then consuming it sure does sound a lot like being eaten alive. Sure, its not the whole "being eaten your entire body by a huge animal" sort of thing, but still.

And yeah, there are worst things to have, but I still think it takes a magically terrifying creature to take several mentally destroying fears (being eaten from the inside out, having something force itself into your body, specifically your dick/vag, and the very high percentage of death that results if it isn't treated quickly) and combine them. Don't forget they're translucent and practically invisible in the murky water they live in!

Lol @ Wikipedia for saying they're feared more than piranha. The irony I see is that they're native to Brazil, and some of the most beautiful (and bootyfull) women are native to Brazil. Guess who's going to cancel their trip to the tropics this summer

I think all of you are missing out on this vital fact. Something that I can't see that can kill me doesn't mean nearly as much as a translucent eel with barbs that has been documented to try to enter my body through my urethra.

It's a fish I think not an eel. Also it is attracted to uric acid that is why it goes up your pee hole.

Personally as painful as it is I would rather deal with the fish than a brain parasite or a bot fly burrowing into my head or elephantiasis, or any other non-curable fatal parasites.

Not sure if you're trying to make the assertion that people AREN'T more afraid of those fish than pirahna, but...

Piranha are only dangerous when they're starving, which is when they will gang up on anything and tear it apart. Generally, wild piranha are well-fed, since, you know, they have this thing called natural instinct which tells them to eat every once in a while. >.>

My friend owned a few pirahna... ugly little buggers, but not very dangerous.
