Removing status effects in WoW is dependent on the type of effect it is. Silence is often a physical affliction and can only be removed by spells which provide immunity to physical effects. So yeah, most of the time there's no removing Silence. No such thing as echo drops.

Guessing you wiped on the bats in Uldaman. Pulling more than one of those at a time is generally very bad, don't let party members force you into making a bad decision. Pull small groups first, pay attention to the damage/debuffs they apply, and if your group comp can handle that x 3-4, pull bigger groups. Getting chain poisoned isn't a big deal. Getting chain silenced/stunned/disoriented is. Not much different from other MMOs (or group-based video games) in that regard.

I hate that silence prevents you from thunderclapping >.> I can understand not being able to shout, but I guess it somehow also silences the loud explosion from you hitting the ground. Silence apparently puts your character inside a sound bubble.

If you AND the healer got silenced one of two things happened:

    1) The healer was in melee range of a group of mobs with one of the few bats in Ulduman. Healers fault.

    2) You pulled the golem boss along with a group of mobs (or maybe even solo) who puts out cyclones that silence people and they can reach anyone at range. Not necessarily your fault.

I let them know at the beginning that I was still in the learning phase for group stuff, but he pushed me to keep pulling bigger groups. We were still moving along with the bigger pulls, but I had to keep drinking to get mana back every couple of groups.

We ended up wiping because I was dumb and thought I could pull bigger groups...the healer and myself both got silenced (is there an equivalent to echo drops in WoW?) on a big pull and we wiped. Probably my fault, but I'll chalk it up to learning experience.
Tanking is by far the hardest role for a new player. It's not incredibly complicated on its own, but the learning curve is steep compared to dps and healer, and people are generally unforgiving (especially at 80). As a dps, you have plenty of time to adjust to everything, and your mistake will go unoticed. As a tank, people will expect nothing less than perfection, even if they fuck up just as much. There is no reason to feel bad about it, just be ready to take some heat.

Since it's your first character, it might be easier to play as a retribution paladin and learn more about game mechanics and dungeon. I'm not saying to give up on prot, but essentially, you could play up to lv 80 on retribution and dual spec to prot after getting a few tanking pieces. There is no real benefit to start tanking early if you think it's too much for you.

There is no such thing as echo drop in WoW, but I would recommand to get decursive as soon as you can. This addon has a very simple and easy to use UI that allow you to dispel the debuff from your party. While it won't help you if you're silenced, being able to dispel your healer instantly is important.

Now, if you happen to be in a situation where you need a dispel immediately, you could always use "Divine Protection". It gives you a 100% immunity to every dmg for 10 sec and dispel every debuff you have. However, you need to click it off immediately (right click the icon) since it will make you lose threat. Basically DP--> click it off --> righteous defense-> hand of reckoning . This little trick can be a life saver in certain situation. In your case, you were probably fucked up either way though, since these bats spam silence.

Also, you might want to consider downloading both add-on I posted in my previous post, they are incredibly helpful on tank job.

That's what bad player always say. Good player are usually able to enjoy anything they play, and will figure a way to push their classes to the maximum. Diamicles didn't sound like a bad player anyway, I'm sure he is smart enough to decides what he wants from my posts. It's not like I implied Ret was the only way to go, I simply said it's easier on a new player who is trying to learn the mechanics (because it is).

Also, being able to see differents tank (for the best and the worst) is actually a good way to learn. Getting yelled at is not usually.

I mean he should stick with whatever he links not being a prot.

You suggested he should swithc to lolret and faceroll his way to 80 and then pickup tanking again, like wtf and you call me bad?

Edit: There is enough material on the internet that anyone can pick any class and do just fine, so your point and mine both are moot. All people needs is 10 minutes of reading to avoid being bad.

Ret is easier for sure, but I wouldn't say it's "facerolling" for a new player who actually try. Reading a faqs can correct a few wrongs, but it won't magically make you react instantly to everything.

Because ret level faster solo, and the game doesn't seriously start before 80, it's not a bad choice for leveling. The spec has enough skill to get familiar with typical button pressing while keeping your rotation (Repentance, AoW+flash of light, dispels, hands of protection...etc). Beside, it's not like he would be clueless about tanking class once he go back to prot, and reading faqs would make a lot more sense at that point. I'm sure he will be fine with any specs, all I was saying is that if he want a less stressful environment with less bitching and smoother learning curve, Ret paladin is a good place to start.

I wasn't calling you bad, but the "pick what you like" argument is silly if it's not comming with a proper description of the choice.

Apparently it did make a difference since I got an email from customer service with the T10.5 balance druid hands in them saying that they checked the logs and saw the hands were unlooted. Big difference with FFXI for sure, in WoW they actually do crap instead of saying "We'll look into it". I wonder if they ninja got his just reward though, I didn't see anything about that.

I guess I'm still in the ffxi mindset - I'd like to know how to play and be proficient at my job before I hit the level cap. I'll stick with protection, I don't have enough gold to dual spec yet (only about 600g right now) Retribution plays like a different class than protection from everything I've read since your role is dps instead of threat generation/holding mobs. I'd much rather get used to tanking now, than try to learn the intricacies of threat generation at a level that everyone would probably expect me to know what I'm doing.

tanking isn't difficult, it's the grouping aspect that I need to get used to since the dynamics are a little different than ffxi.

What has happened since I last posted. Hmm.

My SPriest got a pt yesterday where the tank went afk for the better part of 15 min, near the end of UP (middle of the stairs after Skadi). I wanted to wait until we were capable of kicking him, but I ended up waiting to kick the mage instead. The mage proceeded to keep pulling the groups of mobs. Pulling meant aggroing them, running to the three other members and using invisible, then not reentering combat. I wasn't very geared, neither were the DK or the tree, so it was a near wipe. I rezzed the tree and the DK and myself barely survived. He immediately did it again, and thanks to Blink and Invis, caught up with us. The Druid was able to Prowl and rezzed the Dk and myself. I proceeded to "talk" with the mage on the finer points of not being a complete idiot to waste time before the kick, and the tank came back in the meantime. He was booted right before the last boss pull. I'm hoping I made him use up at least another hour of his day to re-obtain those Frosts, if he even bothered.

One of my ICC 10 pugs had a hunter that put of Aspect of the Pack on at the start of the fight. I didn't notice til the first Bonestorm and started yelling/typing. He did not click it off and well...yea. My priest isn't a great healer anyway since he is Shadow MS and not gear optimized, so that didn't help one bit when most of the raid got dazed in Coldflame.

After waiting the customary few seconds, my Warlock proceeded to do a basic Rain of Fire AoE on the mobs in the first side hallway in UP in the daily. I was Demo spec, so naturally there's no -threat talents in it. I took hate, but used Soulshatter since it was up!...which did nothing, and died (I used one RoF, mind). I didn't really care about the dying, and said nothing, just waiting for a res. The healer proceeded to not res me after I several moments of clearly ignoring me, saying "I don't Rez dps who peel hate off the tank. Release and walk back. L2Omen." I was so amazed for a moment that I said nothing, but thankfully the Ret Pally in our party considered it dumb and ressed me asap. I had a choice few words for that shitty priest. Few hundred, that is. I switched to Afflic and stayed in that party to finish up, refusing to let it stop me. And Soulstoned the Ret Pally. ~_~ My main is a career healer so the thought of people regularly having to deal with healers like that made me even more pissed, but I didn't want to hold up the raid with text so most of it was in tells. Despite my constant bickering I still managed to do significant dps, thankfully.

I've had plenty of good times too thankfully, far more than bad.

This is a great trick for paladins to get out of many things that other classes cannot do; however, it doesn't work on everything, but for probably about 95% of all debuffs that mobs place on you, it will get rid of. I recommend making a cancel aura macro for it, so you can just press your DP hot key twice to cast and then remove it.

I can only think of a few boss' debuff that resist DP. Dot, silence, movement impairing (although, freedom works for that) are usually canceled, especially against trash.

I agree a cancel macro is probably the best, it's just that I never use mine for w/e reason.

You will need around 300g at level 60 for the flying mount, and 5000g at level 77 for the epic flying mount (you will get that much from questing in nortrend), It's essentially all the money you will spend before 80. There is no reason to get dual spec now it if you don't plan to use it, but since money shouldn't be an issue, there is no point holding it either once you get enough.

I don't think experience as a tank or dps matter much before 80. Any ret could change on prot and do fine, and vice versa, as long the player is able to spend 30min reading his abilities and talents. The learning in WoW has more to do with visual awareness of what's happening around you than mechanics relatedy to your curent role.

So stop suggesting him to go ret then? If the man wants to tank or heal or roll a mage, then so be it.

What I said in my last has nothing to do with this. Dual spec is useful, and he is about to do the same mistake I made on my first character (hold on your money until 80 level to spend it on stuff you could have bought before). He could make a solo spec and a party spec, or 2 holy spec for all I care, having 2 spec is avaible is always better than 1.

And again, while anyone can succesfully complete instance and learn their class, don't pretend most pug will be nice to him. People hate fresh tank with 25k hp at 80, people hate tanks who don't know the way or how to pull the wrong stuff, and they are generally rude toward tank who are going through a learning phase. If that shit doesn't bother you, then fine, do whatever you want, but it won't be rainbow and butterflies everywhere.

Just did a skirmish with a 5/5 Wrathful disc vs arms/ret. I am also 5/5 Wrathful disc. Our combined heals couldn't keep him alive through their damage. That's how strong my spec is, you double our healing output and we still can't live vs 2 dps.
