ok in all seriousness though lol. This worries me for account security. My email and I'm sure many others emails (battle.net) is a variation of my real name, which obviously is my Real ID... so lets say my name is John Smith and I'm posting on the forums, [email protected] wouldn't be too hard to figure out, and there is no way for me to change my bnet without buying a whole new set of wow discs and making a new Bnet.
Yeah, instead of kids trolling the wow forums on alts, they'll troll the wow forums under their parents names. Big improvement.

They are also changing your forum avatar to the card holder's driver's license photo.

Instead of your characters level it will show your social security number.

Not really a complaint, per se, mostly sheer amusement, but...

Another "hardcore" transfer-based guild just formed on Grizzly Hills. Their realm forums recruitment post states they hate the realm, our raiding guilds suck, and the core people who started the guild only came here from Antonidas (the bestest and most highly progressed realm ever, btw) because they had to with their current guilds, but HOMG THEY WANT EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS ONRY.

I give them a couple months tops, until they realize that while the Hills do indeed have some exceptional players, they are all either spread out across the few semi-decently progressed guilds we have and staying because they are happy there, or they end up realm transferring to find a guild that meets their standards.

With a person's email AND name you can dig up a lot of shit pretty easily. Even with just the name if you know where they live abouts it's pretty easy. My old guild leader used to think this was impossible, until I found out where he went to school, how old he was, his address and phone number, all his sisters information and her myspace/facebook. Took me all of 20mins. Though he didn't have a very generic name.

They didn't say they were going to expose someone's email, did they? Just first/last name?

Exposing emails would be a pretty gross violation of privacy. All joking aside, Blizzard wouldn't get away with that.

And for me with a generic name (there's a pro-football player with my name, and tons of people on professional job websites with it too) you can find out my information a lot easier through my handle Eaglestrike. I have my doubts this is something specific to me.

There are tons of people who don't reuse online handles, ever.

    Like me.

Shit's situational. Just because your real name isn't a privacy concern for you doesn't mean it isn't a privacy concern for the rest of us.

I think there would be less outrage if they were to just shut down the forums entirely. This makes the forums unusable for the vast majority of players. Everyone is going to retreat to unofficial community forums, teamliquid (starcraft), wowace or wowinterface (for wow ui devs), elitistjerks (for wow raiders) etc. The quality of posting on those forums is already much greater than the official forums anyway.

My concern lies in what their next invasion of privacy is going to be, hopefully not shifting all friends systems to realid-only. Though it does feel like that is the next step.

Apparently to prove that IRL information can't lead to anything on the internet a community manager posted his name on the Warcraft forums. Then a bunch of other people posted his personal information. And showed that he lived with his mother.

That's something my friend dug up, not sure if that's legit, but if so, then lol.

The people who claim not to see the big deal about this astonish me. I'll refrain from regurgitating most of the complaints, but a key one relates to current / future employment.

Some of us have relatively unique names, and if an employer or potential employer googles or - invisible pink unicorn forbid - pipl.com / intelius searches our names and finds all of our posts on a MMO forum... their opinion of the employee or applicant will drop. This is why people in the real world make their Facebook status private. The forums offer no such luxuries.

I don't even post outside of my realm forums. lol

It's not necessarily what you post that could be a detriment - it's potentially that you post. Get real.

Well, given the current state of the world (that being, lots of everything surrounded by technology). I sure as hell wouldn't want to join a company that looks down upon a hobby (They dont have to know I'm addicted to it ;p).

The point still stands. Along with innumerable other flaws in this... feature. Blizzard's ESRB Privacy Certification logo on the forums needs to be removed - as well as the game's ToS needing modification.

It's amusing to me that if you posted someone's real life name on the forums prior to this announcement you would have been banned - yet now Blizzard is making real life names mandatory on the forums? Preposterous.

They modify the ToS every patch with new features, and every patch I dont read it Wouldn't know if there is something about realid or not there.
