Strawman much? I haven't seen anyone complain about anything being unrealistic, but rather that this:

is really over the top in a kiddy/cartoony way, which WoW has always been in a lot of ways, but not to that degree, and not as the spotlight focus. I don't give a shit personally, but I think it's going to alienate more potential players than it's going to draw in.

It's a gross generalization to put all these races in the same group. Werewolf and minotaurs were used in a scary context for a while in fantastic story, and it's much easier to take them seriously than a walrus or a Panda.

I'm pretty sure I've seen complains about Walrus in Wrath, but it was easy to overlook since they didnt play a huge role. Panda on the other hand are going to be everywhere now. It doesn't help that blizzard gave them a laid back attitude either.

And don't get me wrong, I don't really cares about Panda and I'm planning to play this, but it's going to be hard to take this expansion as seriously as the one before.

You apparently haven't been on the internet the past 3 days. My bad, I'm a bit irritated at all the people QQing about "omfg there's humanoid pandas, that's retarded." Maybe he didn't specifically say as much here, but it's -everywhere-. Not really a strawman, it's just the popular thing to bitch about this weekend.

Doesn't look over the top at all. Have you done a /dance on well, any character in WoW at all? Have you watched gnomes and goblins swing a staff or polearm? Shit's all ridiculous, it's what WoW is. They have pop culture humor at every turn and slapstick humor all over the place. Anyone who claims that pandas alienated them has been seriously looking for an excuse to quit and just can't even admit it to themselves.

I've had trouble taking WoW story seriously since day 1...I guess I'm the minority? I remember all sorts of jokes in TBC about "world threat...world threat...trolls...world threat...world threat...trolls!" Plenty of things have built in jokes too, I can't even remember most of them anymore, but they were everywhere you turned.

Also, if you wanna bitch about storyline, why are people not bitching about "Illidan will most likely be back"...really? Because Maiev killed him and we didn't get to so she actually just tranq'd him or something? Wonderful. Oh well, it's another raid boss and hopefully will be a fun fight to progress on!

You should probably level a Goblin character to ~25 then come back and say that somehow five minutes of preview footage for pandarens somehow pushes the 'kiddy/cartoon' limits WoW has danced its entire existence.

Dontchaknow, goblins alienated tons of players! I completely forgot how ridiculous the entire goblin start area was, lol, thanks for reminding me.

Worgen area was pretty hilarious making all sorts of fun of werewolves (and little red riding hood, but who didn't see that coming?).

I don't get why people are making such a big deal out of Panda's when the bigger question should be are they going to address real gameplay issues that they had in cata? If they do offer a lot more to do between raid nights then who fucking cares about what race they added.

Bringing back a dead hero with demonic magic isn't unthinkable in this universe. It wouldn't be the best twist, but it's not really offending.

Not to mention I've been expecting Illidan to train Demon Hunter since forever, so I can't say I'm surprised they want to bring him back.

As for taking any lore seriously, I do think that some plotline are better than other like I said previously. Titan/burning legions, the old god, WC3 hero storyline...they are fine.

Goblin typically use darker humor, unlike the panda who are more lighthearted. Yes, both races arent particularly serious, but in Warcraft universe, the norm seem to be toward darker one.

They admitted that this was a problem with Cata that they plan to address.

The only difference, I believe, is that most of the people that didn't complain about the goblins but then later complained about pandas weren't looking for something to be alienated about then, and are looking for something now.

Just as a casual non-representative sample on this and other forums, I have to say that a significant number of people that are complaining are people that have already quit and just looking to justify their position.

The problem I have is not what to do between raid nights, but what to do once you have capped VP.

I'm still not sure why some people think WoW is a dark and grim game or something, Vanilla and BC were not that all that dark teenager angst stuff, WoTLK and Cata for the most part are the expansions that came off that way and i'm glad the next one won't be all "Oh no the world is going to end, woe is us, go fight the big bad guy..but wait! Fight him only after you do a bunch of other crap first even though he's still a major threat!"

I would say WoTLK was different because the gloom end of the world worked, Arthas everyone knew and it was set up pretty well. To me and others though Cataclysm has just left a sour taste and i'm looking at this new expansion to be a welcome change if Blizzard honors their word and comes through with all the changes they say they will. Just the new talent system set up was enough to breathe new life into this game, and despite there being pokemon now at least Blizzard seems to know people HATE sitting around in Org/SW all day and night and want them to go out into the world at least.

It's not really the same feel thou. The goblin starter area is silly sure, but it's also pretty grim. Comparing goblins (and most of the silly stuff I've seen in WoW), to the way they've shown off pandarans, is like comparing looney toons to disney stuff. They're both cartoony/silly, but one gives off a strong 'kiddy' kind of impression that the other doesn't.

As for illidan, the in-game WoW story has always been awful, especially illidan's 'story', or lack there of in TBC, so it's hard to care really.

I guess I'm just not much of a cartoon connoisseur, but your analogy makes 0 sense to me. They seem pretty much the same to me...also, I must have missed the grimness of the goblin start area...because deathwing blew it up it was grim? I mean, from what they've released on Pandaria, it has some sort of trouble as well...must be grim. But of course, based on animations alone, you've decided this cannot be the case. Goblin animations are super serious though.

Goblin's story deal with murders, drugs, corpse mutilation and many other petty things. Panda have alcohol, but all around, they seem a lot more friendly and noble.

I'm sure we are going to see panda get insta-jibbed and stuff like that (WoW humor), but I find it hard to believe you don't see any differences between both.

The goblin starting area was modeled after GTA and that's the direction they went. It wasn't really dark, per se, but it was a lot less friendly than the pandas appear to be.

Who honestly cares about all this panda crap. Keep me busy with multiple areas of content, and pretend like you care about the balance (or lack of) in arena and I'll gladly pick up the expansion. I wouldn't care if they added mickey mouse as the new race with disneyland as the new raid. If the content is interesting and has some longevity I'm all for it. People always find something to complain about

It's 100% a satire. I personally don't see how a satire can be dark. It's poking fun at other things, not setting up something dark. I fully expect the Panda area to be a satire dealing with martial arts movies/games/popculture. It's 100% WoW's style...
