Have any of you undergone Lasik surgery?

Im tired of wearing contacts/glasses day in and day out. The other day my friend, amanda was telling me about how she ended up getting lasik surgery for 750/eye. Now i realize i been in a cave playing FFXI before the LM-17 for the last 3 years, but good lord i didnt know it was so damn cheap. She said the perfect vision lasts approx 10 years. So im assuming she has to buy it again afterwords... But still.. my glasses are like 350 bucks. To not have to worry about losing them or waking up w/o them and having ok vision, id gladly pay the extra $.

But other than her, i dont know anyone else who's went through it, so im asking here if anyone has. And if they would recommend it.

750/eye seems incredibly low...is that just the 'base' cost and then they charge you for the anesthesia, sterilization, bed, etc?

I'm always suspicious of 'low prices' on surgical procedure, even if it's something relatively innocuous as lasik.

My uncle went through Lasik around the time it first came out (and expensive as sin). He complained of dry eye a lot for a while. Not sure if that still applies now. You probably want to talk to an Optometrist about the pros and cons, and preferably not BG.

    Underwear?!

I want Lasik, or maybe just even try contacts, but I don't like the idea of putting shit in my eye.

Had a friend who got the surgery about 9 months ago also complained the constant dry eye. She was told it would go away after 6months, but she still has it as of now.

I'm also thinkiing about getting it in a year. I've always seen the ads in the back of the paper advertising for 299/eye or something crazy. But I don't think eye surgery is something I'd shop for a deal. You get what you paid for so I'll be looking for the most reputable place. I've been wearing contacts/glasses since I was 8 so finally being able to fall asleep while watching tv on my side is priceless.

Just read the wiki article on LASIK, and I quote,

The most common complication from refractive surgery is the incidence of "dry eyes." According to an American Journal of Ophthalmology study of March 2006, the incidence rate of dry eyes from LASIK after the six month post operative healing period was 36.36%.[37]. The FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) website states that "dry eyes" may be permanent.[38]

The risk for a patient of suffering from disturbing visual side effects such as halos, double vision (ghosting), loss of contrast sensitivity (foggy vision) and glare after LASIK depends on the degree of ametropia before the laser eye surgery and other risk factors.[39] For this reason, it is important to take into account the individual risk potential of a patient and not just the average probability for all patients.[40] The following are some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK[41][42]:

Shouldn't have necessarily had said I wanted it, but I've thought about getting it. I just hate going to the beach/pool and not being able to see shit for the entire time I'm there.

geez... 36% huh? she complained about the artificial tears she was forced to put in like 1 month after the surgery, but said she was perfect after. Im just gonna go in for a consultation i guess and see what kind of prices/procedures ill go through.

and holy shit @ 250/eye, was that in mexico? lol. The one she referred me to was in an office about 45 min away from me in Miami for 750 and she claims her Dr had a very good reputation! But i think ill just have to do the researching on my own <_<. Ill pay an extra 300-400 bucks for a Dr i know is qualified.

I was about to undergo Lasik before I became a pilot (was aiming for Navy >.>) and said fuck it because I don't want people cutting up my eye lol. Instead, I still suffer from 90/20 in my left eye

When I worked on Extreme Makeover, I took about 8 people to get LASIK. Of those 8, all had remarkably improved vision. The "surgery" (lol) takes about 30 minutes, no anesthesia, no pain. One of those 8 had to go back for a "touch-up".

I have great vision, but if I didn't I'd get LASIK in a second. I think it's crazy that "instantly improve vision forever" isn't at the top of everyone's "shit I'd spend money on" list.

My step dad got lasik about 6 months ago and said it was the best money he ever spent in his life.

One of my best friends Matt got it about 3 months ago and loves it.

Both of them went to the same place and both carry around some kind of special eye droplets and have to put them in their eyes every 2 hours for the first year. If this is something you can't do, don't get it.

Edit - I think a lot of people are afraid of "In 40 years will I be completely blind?"

I got it done in March 07. I never got dry eye. The worst part was the ride home from the dr. I had burning tears streaming down my face, but my eyes didn't hurt. Went to bed for 6 hrs, woke up went downstairs and watched TV.

The surgery itself was pretty cool, I didn't get a copy of my video but I definitely would like a copy.

The craziest part of the surgery was smelling my own eyeball "burning". Kind of smelled like burnt hair.

I've worn glasses since the fifth grade, and, honestly, I can't see myself not wearing them. I've considered getting LASIK, just not very seriously. I don't want to put things in my eyes; I sure as hell don't want a laser in it. Though, a teacher of mine underwent the surgery years ago and she had absolutely no issues with the procedure.

to anyone considering semi-seriously considering them, make sure you see an optometrist asap.

they will not approve your surgery unless they are sure your prescription hasn't changed over the past year+.

i wanted to do it last year (and had the cash), but since my eyes changed a little bit (was 5 years since my previous pair of glasses), my doc said i'd have to wait minimum one year.
