Steam version always needs steam up, and you can only buy expansions on/through steam. idk if there are trading cards or steam achievements.
Stand-alone, you just use the S-E launcher, and you can get your expansions anywhere except steam/steam keys (or console versions).
In either case, I think you still need to go through the mogstation to pay your sub and buy the cosmetic stuff.
This is a case where I'd actually not want to get it through Steam because of having to buy expansions through them, especially if it launches through SE anyways. I've never understood the obsession of having to have games bought only through Steam.
Features of the platform. Library management (and all title auto-updating), integrated music player, broadcasting, steam chat/messaging/friend list/groups (and game they're in), market/cards/badges/achievement tracking is a value add for some.
Crusader Kings 2 on sale for $7.99, I remember most people on this board seemed to enjoy it. Pull the trigger?
Like Civ, DLC is considered important, if not vital, to improving the game. (Though updates have improved vanilla.)
Also, the current collection pack does not include the latest two major pieces of content, and has tons of cosmetic stuff you don't NEED. Expect actual price at these sale prices to be more like $40 if you individually get the game and gameplay DLC.
And despite looks, this is not a DLC moneygrab situation.
I see most citing library management and chat. Thing is, you can still use that with any game by adding it to the steam library. I have any installed game added to my library and have never had an issue with getting contacted. I've never used the integrated music player (never even knew it existed, what's it used for?). Broadcasting I was under the assumption most use OBS or something similar.
Just my 2 cents, and not saying anyone's opinion is right or wrong, but wherever the game is cheapest is where I'm getting it.
System Shock 2 is on flash sale for .99 If you haven't played it yet, you owe it to yourself at this price. Such an amazing game.
Tempted to get Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth1. Never played this series before, but I've heard its really good. Should I?
Went ahead and added ps4 GoT ep 1 but it doesn't help too much since I want all of it but on sale lol
Get Hyperdimension. It's 8.99 for a JRPG. If you hate it, it's only ten bucks. However, if you remotely like these games, you will enjoy it. For me, it's all the inside jokes about the industry that sells me on the series. Re: birth fixes a lot of the issues the first one-two had with combat and such, which is great. These go on sale often, so if you hesitate now, it will be 70% off again, or, if you love it, you can grab the second (and third soon), for a great sale price. The music is really fantastic.
Rebirth 1 is awesome, it can be a little slow at times, but it's classic jrpg which can require grinding here and there cuz bosses can really kick your ass unexpectedly. Awesome game overall and Lady Vert <33333
I've been good to my bank account so far. I've only purchased:
GoG:
Grimrock 1 & 2
Steam:
SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition
One Way Heroics
I'm starting strong. Only managed to spend 8.97 on the summer sales so far.
Yea I went ahead and bought Rebirth1 before the big sale ended this morning. Just got home to install it so haven't played it yet, but figured screw it that's what Steam sales are all about.
Welp Steam got me with the ol left, right hook combo. Pillars of Eternity is on sale and a no brainer to get, but I've also been watching Off World Trading Company. Anyone played it before? Good deal but I don't want to spend money needlessly.
Eh, I got bored with off world quickly. If it's cheap pick it up, but don't spend more then 10 bones on it.
I've done so well during this sale, and then I broke down and bought Reus, Planetary Annihilation, Age of Wonders 3 and Walking Dead: Season Two.
I'm about $23 down. Bought like 7 cheap games totaling around a dollar (for the steam cards). Chivalry 4 pack, Final Fantasy IV, Call of Juarez Gunslinger + Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon bundle, and How to Survive - Storm Warning Edition. I'll probably pick up 3dMark when it goes back to $5. Not sure why I didn't grab it in the first place.
