Strategy - Starcraft, C&C series, Total War series, Civilization series
FPS - Crysis and Crysis Warhead if your laptop can handle them. STALKER series if you're in to that. ARMA2/Operation Arrowhead is a military simulator if you're in to that.
RPG - Man there's tons, Witcher series, Gothic series, Mount & Blade series, Torchlight, Magicka, KOTOR series, Divinity 2, Kings Bounty, Titan Quest
Survival Horror - Amnesia: Dark Descent

They're all or mostly PC exclusive but I mean, it's PC, there's tons of shit so unless you're a little more specific it's hard to recommend games.

Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 are still fucking $20 for digital download? This upsets me.
I would agree, but these games are old to the point that my original discs that I bought don't install a working game on anything close to a new computer. Diablo especially, I haven't had a computer that could run that game for about 8+ yrs.

getting it on steam would even worry me. When I bought a dev pack of games last summer I got the full spectrum warrior games in it that were supposedly great about 5 yrs ago. They did not work on my new pc or my old pc...

Unless you plan to use a laptop as primary pc, I would only bother putting little games on it that would kill some time during travel/in the motel. My netbook(yes I know it couldn't handle anything more anyways) just has a few steam games like:

    audiosurf
    beat hazard
    the penny arcade rpg
    flight contro hd

the fact is, besides making sure they work, I've never actually played them on the thing, gaming is for desktops...

Might stretch back more into the time you'd played PC games, but check out http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/ as well. They make sure things run, often with DOSBox, and don't have DRM. Almost nothing they sell is over $10.

Blizzard game prices tend to stay relatively static once they get to a certain point, kind of like Nintendo stuff. The Battle Chests aren't too bad of deals though.

As said though, a decade worth of PC games? Hard to narrow down. Doubly so when a lot of stuff could have been played via console versions (inferior as they may be).

Given the apparent focus on acquiring Blizzard games though, Torchlight is a definite >_>

Value-wise, the Witcher is a pretty solid deal nearly any way you get it these days.

I do kinda worry about older games installing on a Windows 7 machine. I finished Warcraft 3 download (from a source on demonoid with like 120 seeds and no reports of a virus) and the free trial of norton AVG killed it when I tried to install - didn't even ask, deleted the 1.06 GB file. Ugh.

Probably just going to turn AVG off before I install I guess?

You shouldn't even be using that piece of shit anyway. Delete it and download Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes.

Yes, sorry - initially meant to just say "OK what's awesome on steam get at me" but it evolved a bit.

Minecraft is good for a decent amount of time for anyone. I enjoyed supreme commander allied assault, as well.

There is a XP compatibility mode that can be downloaded directly from Microsoft, but I'm not sure if you can get it for the home version.

It doesn't support 3D graphics, and it won't install for the home version anyway. If you really want to try a VM, you could try VirtualBox, which is free, but I doubt it's necessary to get it to run. I haven't tried Warcraft III, but Starcraft runs just fine on 7 64-bit.

I was able to download and play Warcraft III on 7 64 bit, and I use Microsoft Security Essentials, had no issues at all.

Most old games will work on W7, you just might need to tweak a few things to get everything smooth. I have no issues playing all of Blizzard's old games, or things like FFVII PC on 64 bit W7

Only problem im having is getting some of the cinematics to load in some of the blizzard games but thats just as much because of the bootleg copies as anything.

Gaming is kinda hard on a touchpad.

Gaming? Dude, everything is annoying using a touchpad. I am pretty sure I bought a mouse for my laptop within 24 hours of owning it. I actually liked it more when they had those little nubby clit things.

Yeah, ive never liked touchpads (hence never having a laptop before) and the only ones i was used to using were on macbooks at work or from friends, which IMO are far superior to any PC touchpad ive ever discovered. However, ive gotta figure out how im setup for using a mouse, ill kill my back sitting on my couch hunched over mousing on the coffee table.

If anyone has a recommendation for a great cheap bluetooth mouse i can get online PM me, i dont wanna shit up the Steam thread anymore with this stuff.
