AFAIK it counts quick saves as regular saves, so if you're like me and quicksave all the time...you'll wind up with a lot of them to step back through if you have a problem. I didn't run into too many issues, but every so often... like later in the game you get "tested" in a lab, and one part had the obstacles not animate, making it a lot easier :D Had a mini-boss type character get stuck in the ceiling on my second playthrough as well (Malkavian...it was suggested to me, and in turn I'd suggest to you, it's a hoot, but if you're not familiar with the game already you might miss some of the humor).

Grabbed Bloodline, among others (Cthulhu & S.t.a.l.k.e.r.), but I hate that I have to go through this shit => http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2025035 just to get the game running. /sigh, why can't this be patched from the start?

    Because licensing issues.

What I don't get is why they don't offer it as a user 'mod' that you can select to install and run the game via that instead.

Anyone played Bastion give a yay or nay on it? It's half-off for another two days and I've strongly considered picking it up at full price and $7 seems like a steal if it's as good as the press has made it out to be.

So, I know this isn't exactly the right place for this, but I just downloaded steam (LOL I KNOW RIGHT). So it's pretty much just a place to download and buy games instead of going to the store and buying them? Are there any tips or anything, like which companies to avoid or anything like that. There is a free to play section, does anyone have any recommendations for any of the free games so I can break myself into using steam? Or am I over-complicating it lol

    Yep.

Wait for sales to buy anything. The prices often drop by 75%. If you already have a legit serial# you can link a game to your steam account. You can add non-supported games, but in that case it just becomes a convenient launcher. I think TF2 is "free" now with an upgrade to full if you spend a few cents in the in-game store.

Free to Play section, mostly MMO type games though.
Sale/Special deals this section can become very messy when they have packs on sale with lots of games/DLC but will list all of the games they currently have at a reduced price.

Best time to buy is during the sales, even then Steam isn't always the cheapest place (d2d, amazon etc can have better/same deals occasionally) there are big sales during winter/summer afaik. Also, Steam can actually be quite bad for buying AAA games on release from as places like amazon will quite often sell them for cheaper and some non-valve games like Deus Ex: HR require Steam even if you buy a physical copy.

There's no companies to avoid type thing that doesn't exist with physical media; steam is just a digital distribution client (as well has providing forums/unified friends list etc) that you buy and download games from.

You picked a good time to join Steam. Thanksgiving sales will occur later this month, and then the wallet-raping Xmas sale will be mid-December. I still haven't played half the shit I picked up last Xmas, just never had the time!

As mentioned, the heart of the Steam store is waiting for the sales, because that's where you'll be saving money. As for companies to dodge on Steam, isn't really any. Only beef I have is some of the earlier Win 95-era games on there like Quake 1/2, Jedi Knight, etc, are distributed 'as-is'. In the case of those games, it means the publisher never looked at a means of preserving the redbook audio, which makes for zero music during gameplay since the game is still looking for the physical CD to play the music off of.

There ARE a few landmines to avoid on Steam that aren't solved by buying instead from GOG, but that has more to do with port quality than anything else. i.e. Steam still sells you shitty PC ports of otherwise good games like Saints Row 2. Also avoid Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines unless you like to do a lot of manual patching and mucking with internal game files to bring the visual quality up and get rid of the shitty bugginess of an otherwise excellent game.

You'll also see a flurry of activity in this thread wrt games to look out for during sales. Very often you'll have posts evangelizing otherwise overlooked titles on sale for < $7 on steam, and this happens most often during the big sales.

I picked that up recently. Seems things have changed in the last year or so as I only needed to download and apply a single patch to get everything up to snuff. Was fairly painless.

Yeah, I ran the one fan patch and was good to go. Not that it was perfect, but I've seen worse.

Considering that you'd need to do that with -any- copy of it, not sure why one would want to avoid it on Steam.

I had never played portal before the demo on steam a week ago. Eagerly awaiting turkey time sales for that and the Civ5 DLC would be great too. Oh, and Darkspore...

You have to spend any amount of money to get a premium account, but the minimum Steam Wallet is $5. You can basically buy 2 keys (an ingame trading currency) and a random on sale item for $.50 to get over $5 and sell the keys back through a 'black market' for about $4.

$5 to steam wallet, $0.49 on a random tf2 item, use the remaining $4.51 on a steam game sale.

Pretty much this. If you have Steam there is no excuse to get Team Fortress 2 since it's now F2P.
