The bus or train mostly for sorting out the complicated stuff, then the toilet for putting on the finishing touches.

    1. Read over the problem a few times.
    2. Ride the bus, figure out the key insight involved.
    3. Having arrived at your destination, use the bathroom, and in doing so sort out the specifics of your approach and iron out any issues with the details.
    4. Grab some paper (wash your hands first) and write out the solution to the problem.

Happened exactly that way so many times in college lol

I'm an engineer for an ISP so I get some complicated problems to deal with sometimes. I don't really think best in any specific spot for me.

If there is a difficult problem I need to sort, I just think about it over the course of a day and my brain will work it out on its own. :D For me to know I have a good solution, I need to have slept once or twice since I started working on the problem.

My biggest enemy is time.. I hate being rushed into solving things so I usually try to prepare in advance for what may come. It is really nice too when shit hit the fan like you predicted and you already have a well thought out response.

Usually while pacing around between various rooms in my apartment, writing on the whiteboards I have scattered around. Occasionally wandering around the office building for a while works as well, although I often end up somewhere completely random

    Usually it's either:

    a. The shower. Not too cost-efficient, as I tend to lose notion of time and end up taking long showers, sometimes.
    b. Pacing around my place, preferably at late-night. Sounds kind of annoying I guess but my family's accustomed to it. I usually just pace around between rooms/kitchen/living room.
    c. Before I go to sleep. Which is the worst because it usually takes me two to three hours to fall asleep, unless I'm completely exhausted, and even then it takes me at least an hour to fall asleep...

Only think I can't do though is do deep/serious thinking while in front of my comp, or after I've just woken up. I'm completely, 100% useless after I've woken up, unless it's an emergency, or I get woken up by a call.

    In this place.

Having access to just about every book ever published on any topic really helps me putting thoughts together, as I'm a total whore for citations. Sure, I get mad ideas in the shower or out for a jog, but it's in the library that I can grab a hold of all the craziness and make it coalesce into a coherent thought.

Agreed with driving. I don't jog often, but when I do, I can get some good thinking done there. Not so much on the can as I usually read a magazine. Sometimes when I go boxing too. It's never serious, just a friend and myself playing more technical and not going for KOs. Just be careful when you open your mouth and how far you do because a hook to your jaw can ruin your conversation... and night.

Oh yeah, I forgot about driving. I do some of my best thinking during long drives with the music on.

When it comes to complicated math problems or something, if I don't figure it out during the day, I'll usually somehow know the answer when I wake up the next day (or after a long nap). I guess my brain likes to process during sleep (but not while falling asleep as some other people have mentioned...weird).

Yeah. For me, it's mostly that I ride alone (With Hitler...) and I can speak as loudly as I want to vent, get things off my chest, or just shout. It's like a cheap shrink for me.

Driving is not a place for me to think at all. The only thing going through my mind is how bad of drivers the people around me are. People are always shocked when they drive with me because I usually end up screaming at the top of my lungs at the cars in front of me. People around here have a nasty habit of talking on their fucking phone when they drive and just decide to chill in a left hand turn lane while the light is green which ALWAYS fucking causes me to get caught at the light. For anyone that lives in the area, grand river and novi road are FUCKING HORRIBLY long. I get caught EVERY FUCKING TIME! It's usually because of assholes like listed above.

GET OFF THE PHONE BITCH, YOU'RE DRIVING.

See, now you got me all pissy.

Definitely the shower, I used to do a lot of thinking when I would drive. Then I moved to Oklahoma and the drivers here get me so frustrated I can't think of anything else.

I think and drive a lot. I have a 20-30 minute drive to and from school every day... I often find myself having conversations out loud, or playing them out as they would ideally happen in my mind. Otherwise I sing in the car. I have this weird ability to remember the words of most songs I listen to, so I can be singing a song as well as thinking about other things.

If I have forgotten something, I will remember it while I am brushing my teeth.

While in bed, walking, or showering. I miss smoking too, cause that was fantastic thinking time.

Honestly the best time I think is when I'm angry or frustrated about something and have a place to pace back and fourth to think about it. The funniest stuff comes out of my mouth when I'm genuinely angry too which is rare.
