54 vs 125 mbit wlan router

    Good morning,

I know running a hardwire from the router to the pc would prolly be the best but sadly it isn't an option so i wonder if I should replace my old router (54 mbit/s) with a newer one capable of doing 125 mbit/s? Would that reduce some of the wlan-lag? As side info, I do have DSL6000 (more not possible due to infrastructure) and my pc should be more than able to handle FFXI (C2D E6750, 4gb ram, 8800 GTS, etc.)

if your running on a 54mbs router and getting lag in ffxi I somehow doubt the speed of the router is the cause rather then possibly the router itself. Granted it is kinda slow compared to newer wireless N solutions, I doubt it's the cause of in game lag unless your transferring files while playing the game or something to that extent.

I'd recommend trying another router before justifying the purchase

Thx for the quick response and i totally forgot to mention the router itself, it is some older Fritzbox 31XX (not sure which one exactly b/c I am not at home atm.)

your network adapter also has to support the speeds of the router, or it will continue to run at the lower speeds

While they did bring up that your speeds run at the lowest common denominator, most wireless adapters are capable of up to 100 mb/s. The problem isn't usually the router or the adapter, but the actual internet service. For example, if your service is only 3 mb/s, it doesn't matter if your adapter and router are capable of 100000 gb/s, you're still capped at 3 mb when on the internet. Internal network will be the fastest possible, though still slowed to the lowest common denominator. Honestly, for home usage, you really shouldn't have a need beyond some Best Buy bought wireless router that will fit your needs.

You should consult your ISP and maybe a web service that will test your up and down speeds. Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test for example. There are others for a range of results if you want to search for them. If it's slower than what you desire, shop around. If you're with Comcast, ask about any specials as I currently have 6 mb/s upgraded to 12 mb/s free for 3 months. And they don't use contracts so you can cancel it before you start getting billed for 12 mb/s a month.
