You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    connecting laptop to HDTV

So we recently bought a 32" Dynex HDTV (was/is still on sale at bestbuy for 300$ if ya want one), and having some trouble getting my fiance's laptop hooked up to it.

Both the TV and the computer are hdmi compatable, and he has hooked up his comp to another hdtv before. What's happening is he hooks up the cable and the computer seems to read it, and the tv "reads it" but will only flash a picture of it every 2-3 minutes. And we can hear the audio through it, but no picture.

Oddly enough though, whenever there is "action" on the computer the screen will pop up again. IE. fiance put up ventrillo to test the sound. The screen stayed blank whenever my fiance talked on vent, but when our friend talked the screen showed up (until the friend stopped talking). As well once we got hulu up it was showing but it'll go to blank screen again once it closes.

One other thing, we have 3 different cables we tried so it's not them.

Since Dynex is bestbuy's brand their website seems to fail and there's really no troubleshooting there. Figured I'd ask the masters though to see if someone has an idea. If not it's under warranty so we can see about trying a different one.

Access your display settings, and try either lowering the resolution, or lowering the refresh rate. Try 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 24Hz, if possible. It's possible that your video card on the laptop is trying to output to a resolution/refresh rate that the TV can't support. I can't find any info online as it seems the Best Buy ad expired, but it should say in the manual what the optimal resolution/refresh rate should be.

Look into what Cephius mentioned first, then look into your drivers. This has happened to me in the past due to my video drivers not wanting to output properly to the TV. It can also be caused if your video cards have forced monitor detection or the like turned on.
