Depends.. do you want your DD to just be a DD, or do you want it to function for other things?

DRG + PUP are decent solo jobs (for e.g)...
DRK can support (stun) or out zerg anyone.. etc...

Really depends what you want out of your job.
Also examine how easy it will be to gear said job (like an existing limbus shell for DRK/DRG (etc) or an existing sky shell for war (etc)).

Pick whichever job you can gear up best with what you have/can lootwhore in the near future.

Though all things considered, DRG is probably the easiest to gear up due to none of their AH gear really breaks the bank.

i would say since you are levelling rdm to 75 first that means you have the opportunity to watch all the different melee jobs on the way up. you can take note of how they do, what gear they wear (and how much influence it has on their performance), then you can look up that gear to see what it costs and give yourself an idea of what it is going to cost you.

whatever it is you do, you'll likely need war and nin subs to 37. and probably sam too. you could get by with one of them if you wanted to rush it (probably war) but thats probably not a good idea.

I'm afraid most ppl here that say pup is kidding or something. Seems most ppl have a "lolpup" mentality. Also, it isn't really a cheap job, some of the attachments you need for your automaton is expensive and pretty rare. I wouldn't recommend it as your first DD job. Invites on it are veeery slow too.

    Level pirate. :D

You'll love the invite rate and if you play it properly the damage is pretty insane.

Though you're not gonna beat a decent WAR or SAM.

    qft

since I have bard, rdm, and cor all 75, i've never had problems getting an invite. cor is the most relaxing of the 3, imo.

Level SAM...everyone else seems to be doing it...it is a fun job and it seems to be in the "Easy job to level" Catagory. DRG is nice job, but sadly towards the end of the game it won't get very much use.

But whatever you do for the love of all that is good and right...DO NOT touch THF as your 1st job..or you will know the true power of a under leveld Dagger.

As for all the PUP comments, most are joking...IT is a nice job if you know how it works. but if i were you, i'd get a better grasp on the other meele jobs before touching it really. Particularly MNK.

BLU can be a lot of fun and is very flexible. It can fill a number of roles, just won't perform on par with those specialized in that particular area. However, acquiring spells can be a royal pain at times, and you have to be judicious with the use of your MP. You see too many out there that just unload all their MP within the first couple of fights and are resting for the next two. It would also help to take the time to familiarize yourself with the modifiers of the spells you use most to maximize the amount of damage for your MP. BLU really gets fun though after 60 with /THF and the spells death scissors and dimensional death. With this setup you can dish out some nasty spike damage, and it only gets better at higher levels when you get Cannonball. However, you'd just better hope your tank is solid or you save it for the last chunk of the mob's HP.

However, be prepared to claw your way through the CoP missions in order to get sea access. There are a number of excellent spells there from enemies that are indigenous to that area (as in you won't find them anywhere else). Having a BLU comes in handy for a number of the missions. Of course you should do this anyway if only for the excellent storyline.

Playing MNK doesn't really give much info on how to play pup, or really any melee job >_> the closest thing would be leveling smn or bst (which also isnt on there despite being a melee job ;p ) and even they aren't really that close to how pup plays.

Id say pup since its fun, but of course, its all up to you and what you find most enjoyable. You can try leveling some jobs to 37 for subs, and this can give you a feel for what you would enjoy doing. Like auto attacking and not doing much? try mnk or war out. want to tank? try nin out. like being able to do some of everything? drg (solo/heal/normal DD), blu (good endgame tank if supported properly/DD/somewhat crappy nukes/decent healing/some solo), or pup (solo/DD/super potent nukes with right merits and attachments/great main heal if monster doesn't hit ridiculously hard like with HNMs, or support healing) are all great options for a variety of situations.

As far as cost goes, all melee jobs are expensive, some moreso than others. Theres basically 3 costs:
    Job ability/spell scroll costs/attachments
Nonrefundable, very nessessary; COR, NIN, DRK all have these, and NINs scrolls can be fairly expensive, though most can be quested or obtained from BCNMs. Corsairs and pups however.... ouch. >.o (P.S. please get all your rolls, my pup wants drachen roll in dyna and all 3 cors dont have it ;_; ) Corsairs rolls are from two vendors that jack prices up painfully, and pups have it the worst with attachments that can cost up to 200-300k (or economizer for 900k, though not essential -_-)The rest of the jobs you will not need to pay for these unless you use one of these jobs as a subjob, of which nin is by far the most likely. Corsairs rolls totaled up probably cost 500k or so? Ninja scrolls probably closer to 1 Mil total, and pups attachments weigh in in around 2-3 mil total, with economizer being the biggest culprit. However, some attachments are fairly useless so skipping some is an option until your bored enough to get em.

    gear costs
most gear can be resold, variety of prices from dirt cheap to wtf
All jobs have this, naturally. Some jobs like MNK, SAM, WAR, DRK are EXTREMELY dependant on gear, and are expensive to outfit. the plusside is you can simply resell them if you get other options. Other jobs like BLU and COR arent horribly expensive to outfit but there is some expensive peices, and PUP is friggin dirt cheap with its gear, and most of the best choices are rare/ex anyways.

    Expendables cost:
nonrefundable once used, very nessesary to nessesary
This is where food and ammunition, ninja tools, pet items like automaton oils +2/pet biscuits, and special items like warriors tomahawks belong. These tend to be cheap enough but the costs pile up, mainly food and ammunition, or if your a ninja main, ninja tools. Some jobs are more reliant on them, with corsair being the ultimate in cost with their bloody iron/steel bullets ~.~ Some jobs are more expensive than others, with COR being king, rng following, then nin, and after that most melee jobs that go /nin. Pup wins again in cheapness here, as /nin is rarely used, we have nothing to shoot, and all we need is sushi and oils. (high level alchemy and a key item can make said oils for dirt cheap, though they arent terribly expensive either way)

As far as total costs go, Its hard to say which job would be the cheapest. I would say probably pup and while attachments cost 2-3 mil total, gear costs like... 150k? maybe? >_>; and its low on expendables as well. However, its also gil thats totally lost, which means you cant ever resell the items to get it back. Corsair wins in the expense department as the rolls + expensive ammo (think 120k for stack of iron bullet pouches, 220k for stack of steel ones) and gear will make a hole in your pocket faster than you can say gobrins. The jobs entirely dependant on melee/ws damage like war and mnk will be expensive as well, but most of that cost is resellable gear.

But all in all, id say go for what you find the most enjoyable, as a person happy with that job will be more motivated to excel at that job, and will be a great person to party with. whichever you choose, do it for your own enjoyment, not for how popular it is in merit parties or endgame activities. If you do well at what you choose you will find a place no matter what job you are.

    GL on your adventures! ^^b

SAM. Simply because it can be used in any battle unlike other jobs where it can become job specific requirements to get anything done.

Warrior is probably the easiest first melee to take to 75.

Other than that, Dragoon and Samurai are two of the most fun jobs to use, IMO anyway.

If you can make your own parties or get a static BRD to lvl with you. Do BST. BST is hella fun in parties, and if you can't get one can solo np. Nothing beats a job that can solo very easily, and still allows you to lot ridill and Ebody (kinda)
