I'd say dragoon, cause overall it's gear is pretty cheap and it's solid DD for most events though it makes use of number of subs sam, war, nin, thf, and a mage sub[rdm, whm, or blu based on preferance].
Get them all to 37, then decide which one you like enough to take to 75. That way most of your subjobs are taken care of, too. If you get tired of one before you get to 37, that's not the one to take to 75.
Level WAR to 75 (GAX), get 8 GAX merits, get 8 polearm merits, skill polearm, get sea/sky/goodies, level SAM, destroy stuff and get 75 super fast, swap merits around depending on how you like each job. Level DRG. Then level magey jobs.
Did SAM to 37 for a WAR sub and hated every second of it. On another character (which I sorta retired) I got SAM to 63 and loved it (though I can't seem to recall how on earth I got it past 40).If you get tired of one before you get to 37 that's not the one to take to 75
Pld is not on your list.
PUP all the way.
If you want a job that is good in any end-game situation, level SAM. Even if you have shit gear, people will let you do stuff on it.
That said, don't level more than one melee type job to 75, it's redundant. I can see doing it if you have a bunch of Homam and Salvage gears lying around to gear them up with, but honestly, nothing pisses me off more than some asshole with half-assed AH gear and 6 fucking melee jobs at 75, who refuses to level BRD or WHM or RDM because "lolz i don't want to have to come on those jobs'. Yeah, right, why be useful?
My advice to the OP is this. If you are leveling RDM just to get into an endgame LS, don't be a pissy half-assed RDM with shit gear, no potency builds, can't-nuke-for-shit, uncapped SS, no merits, walking around in your fucking af. The game has enough shitty DDs, don't be a shitty RDM, *then* a shitty DD. If you actually do get RDM to 75, and actually gear it and merit it and learn to play it well enough that good players let you stick around, you won't need a poll to see which melee job you'd like to level. Chances are pretty good that you're going be smart enough by that time to make an informed decision for yourself as to which job will suit you.
PUP is ftw. Most fun (but probably most complicated) melee job in the game.
i voted for BLM
sounds like good reasoning to me. I'm clicking thf too although my initial opinion was to just choose whatever you found the most fun.
In all honesty, you'll suck no matter what you level as your first melee job as you learn the intricacies, ins, outs, dos, do nots, etc...
PUP
...or DRG I guess
DRG is my favorite melee job. DRG has versatility (I'd honestly rather have a really good DRG with topped healing breath than a mediocre whm) and cool weaponskills (no, seriously, drakesbane is the shizz) and it's not horridly expensive, but will give you some gear staples that you can use later on other DD jobs (ex: acc rings, amemet+1, pcc/chiv, all that good stuff).
I vote Dragoon!
Kind of situational. Personally, I went with WAR to fit my 2h DD type needs (have NIN and BST too, but they fill different niches in general). I'd recommend it. It may not be the absolute best, but it's capable of being a strong contributor in basically any situation where melee damage is viable. It's also easier to tack /NIN onto WAR for co-tanking or first-voke or whatever.
You also have the benefit of being able to skill nearly every weapon, and wear a lot of gear sets...so if you decide you want to specialize a bit more, your next DD job could likely have at least a merited seconary weapon, and ding into some nice endgame gear.
DRG is probably easier and cheaper on the whole though, when looking at Colibri XP/merit.
