Lol wow I remember those mock up UI screens from so along that someone had made on the windower forum. Perhaps it will become a reality now.

Why hire him when he is doing it for free?
Seriously, Windower is really win/win for SE. They can get "inspiration" for future features in FFXI, and eventually Rapture. Plus, a decent chunk of their player base are getting updates to keep them involved/happy with new features in their game. And all this is happening with zero money/time from them.
All that aside, holy shit, CANNOT WAIT for v4.
Heh I remember that..as well as the Linkshell UI mockup. While nice..but I liked that FFXI's ui was different from the generic MMO layout.
Sorry, if this question is stupid. But I'm a little n00bish with computers.
I DL'd the v4 but it just looks like a real detailed PoL Windower, no time stamp, can't take SS's, or any of that. Did I forget to DL something?
No, you just forgot to read ;x
It doesnt do anything but window atm.
Yeah, just went back to see if I forgot anything, and saw that n bold print at the top.
lol...
I'm getting a weird bug where if I try running it at fullscreen resolution (1680 x 1050) the menus refuse to show up. It's a neat proof of concept for menu replacement, but it does work fine at 800x600.
They did this like 2 years ago. It's called "windowed mode" set in the config program. It was them giving in. It works fine, it just doesn't have any fancy-pants features like windower.
...
I'm going to look like a bitch here, but I'm in agreement that it's turning into a massive player assistant which accidentally happens to allow you to play in a window.
Until now, the only real plugin that gave an -advantage- over non-windower users was the crystal passing bit... which I take offense to because it costs me gil/seals compared to someone who uses it. That aside, TP is still easy to handle, and we just hit 2 macros instead of 1 for a gearswap. I can deal with that. Things like distance start to push the line since it's not something the game can communicate with us normally, but it's basically a replacement for people who can't think out casting ranges and the like. It's not a competitive advantage.
Things like spell casting bars and click-to-action and the like make XI no longer XI. "Bringing it up to date" isn't an excuse. If you want something up to date, go buy something new. The game is as it is. You're basically trying to take the game that is XI and trying to change it into another FF title that happens to have the same play content. Kind of like if you took FF7 and changed the atb interface into the one from FF10. By your logic that'd be an improvement and "necessary" because it'd bring the older title back up to date and take advantage of improved technology. I'm not judging if it's right or wrong, I'm just saying it's not the original product as was intended to be used and SE would probably be pretty angry you screwed around with it like that.
If you want open-source or want to screw with things without restriction, MMOs under closed patching probably aren't where to goof off.
I've tried with multiple settings, it seems like any time I try setting the resolution to anything 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen it opens up FFXI at 1680x1050 (fullscreen) resolution and refuses to show menus. Is there a bug tracker or something we could contribute to somewhere if that would help refine things?
They did this really poorly like 2 years ago. It's called the "windowed mode" set in the god awful excuse for a config program. It was them pretending to give in to the demands of the player base while actually pouring a vial of ex-lax into their coffee. It works fine, it's just not anywhere near as useful like the windower.
...
I'm going to look like a douche here, cutting and pasting Aymee's reply rebranded with my own sentiments, but I'm in agreement that the windower is turning into a massive player assistant which does a lot better job than anything that SE has even thought about implementing since XI's inception.
Until now, the only real plugin that gave an -advantage- over non-windower users was every single one of them, even including that G15Binder plugin... which I take offense to because I don't have that style of keyboard. That aside, TP is still easy to handle without the windower, if you consider the fact that most party members are actually Hellen Keller and aren't even aware that they're playing a game, and to change gear and still be efficient at our job we simply press four or five macros instead of just one. I can't deal with that. Things like Distance start to push the awesomeness bar towards 'total win', but it's basically a replacement for people who are sick and tired of playing SE's guessing game. It's really quite a neat advancement.
Things like spell casting bars and click-to-action and the like make XI no longer XI, they actually make it something far better. "Bringing it up to date" is a fantastic excuse. If you want something up to date, but the publisher doesn't give a damn, take it upon yourself and make it better. The game is as it is and as it is it is in a pretty deplorable state when compared to other games which are as it is and as they are they are pretty awesome. You're basically trying to take the game that is XI and trying to change it into another FF title that happens to be something that is ridiculously more amazing than if it were designed and released by SE. By my logic what you're doing is an improvement and "necessary" because it would bring an old GUI back up to date and takes advantage of improved technology. I'm not judging if it's right or wrong, I'm just saying it's not the original product as was intended to be used and SE would probably be hanging their head in complete shame if they were to see their game transformed from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan like this.
If you want open-source or want to screw with things without restriction, reverse engineer whatever it is and get to work ... and don't goof off.
I wouldnt want them on SE's team, unless they were allowed free reign over what they do, otherwise SE will just make them follow strict guidelines.
