SE: The prevalent RMT company afflicting FFXI.
They haven't really fixed "'PS2 limitations". The memory bottleneck is still there. You wont see anymore storage than this unless they add more bags that you have to open and view separately from your inventory.

Think MMM bags and PUP attachments, or the mog locker and safe. It's all still 160 spaces with one open and your inventory open..

You'll never have more than 80 spaces because of "PS2 Limitations". But they can add tons of separate bags, which bypasses the problem..

That's why I'm now 100% sure this mog satchel is not going to be part of your inventory, but something you have to open and transfer to your inventory like a mog safe or locker. ;/

It stated plainly that you can access it in the field, which is the functionality people have wanted for years - extra space we don't have to talk to a damned moogle for. Who cares that we have to transfer it from one bag to another to use an item? The reality of it is that we will have more room to move shit out of our gobbie bag to avoid missing out on loot due to lack of space, etc.

Funny how SE was never inspired to fix the problem until they seen the ability to profit from it.

Funny how people still can't read -- or claim you need to know a corporation's overall profits and losses to understand whether one specific undertaking is profitable or not -- and understand that they're not making money off of this.

    Wrong!
Regardless of it being an 'expansion' or another 'bag', its still the same amount of memory.

Memory is reserved for every type of storage there is so far, even 81 temporary item slots, REGARDLESS of it being open or not.

They will simply use another 3567 bytes of data to handle the satchel. each item is 44 bytes. +3 bytes used for 'max availible', they use a short and a char duplicate data for some reason, and 81 items.

Boy, a whopping 3kb, and to the PS2 has been so tonight on memory that it had less than 3kb of memory left to expand upon....

aka, SE been lieing their ass off.

they could of dropped 40 slots on temp items and saved 1.7kb of memory.

Out of interest, since you have a better understanding then most about FFXI in this regard., how much memory does the game allocate to diffrent resources during play? Also how much of this (cept inventory itself obviously) can you see improvements being made in?

Reason I am interested is that the 32MB off PS2 has always been slightly bitchy to work with when I were toying around with Linux running on my old PS2. Were only so much you could do with the console in that regard.

But ofc, PS2 limitations...bullshit bullshit bullshit...I love FFXI, but despise the fact that the PS2 is holding it down in areas it could expand ;\
Because people are fucking stupid. Once you accept that, it's easy to understand everything. The majority of MMO players fail to understand the difference between difficulty and tedium. Just look through the past threads about changes to FFXI. Whenever SquareEnix removes something that is tedious, someone somewhere will complain that they're making the game easier. Remember the XP change a few years back?

Turbine recently did something similar and redesigned low-levels and changed the leveling curve at higher levels (except Turbine didn't lower the total XP required to cap). People bitched and complained, talking about how the game was being made "easy."

Hopefully, these people will someday realize that the only skill in an MMO is knowing how to equip yourself and when/how to use X ability. Pressing 4 macros instead of 1 does not make you more skillful, it is just tedious and rather annoying. I have no problem with people bypassing that. Not only does using the Windower scripts remove tedium, but it doesn't negatively effect anyone else.

I think I'm going to have to build myself a new computer when windower 4 comes out. My 5 year old P4, Radeon 9600 pos won't be enough to handle the awesomeness.

Try to make the release of the finished version of windower 4 coincide with the release of SP1 for windows 7. lol

well i dont know details on everything, but in general its 3500 bytes per type of storage location (5 currently, bout to be 6)

but then we got the mobarray i really think they could improve upon.

they currently have 2000 registered memory locations for mobs to be completely loaded into memory.

... and we all know there is never even over 100 models on screen.

Each one of those slots uses about 620 bytes, so were talking over a megabyte wasted.
Why do they do this? because they store everything about mobs you walk past, dead or alive. You walk past the grave of King Behemoth, and a packet is sent with his state when he died (lieing on ground), just set to invisible/untargetable. and when you walk far away, they still are in memory. Test it out with ApRadar's unlock feature.

If SE simply changed the code to not even send data on dead mobs, and remove mobs not being shown to client, and used a simple container like an STL container, they would greatly improve memory usage there.

then lets not forget the duplicate data in god knows how many places, like the party/alliance list is duplicated somewhere but uses diff structures of data. Why? who knows, one prolly is old and not used but still reserving memory for it.

Oh, and theres a bunch of debug code at the end of one the modules that has stuff like server paths where they compile the servers and clients at, and GM commands, and format strings used for GM's.

Hey SE, why not load that up on GM clients only?

Probably because that's what they expect to happen to FFXI when they release the new game.
