I still don't understand how so many of BG have 'overheating' laptops. I've never seen this problem on other forums or anywhere outside of BG lol
My laptop was never truly 'overheating', I just wanted to be able to keep it as cool as possible in order to help extend its life. It's a stock intel, so it runs like 72C when I'm taxing it, with very little airflow under it. I know it probably doesn't help much, but anything to help it last longer is worth it.

alright, again wanted to make sure i just didn't get something that's too small
Now I looked up my laptop on a few diff sites and each one was giving different dimensions for it, so I'm a bit confused, but this is the one I have
    HP Pavilion zd8000 P-4 2.8GHz 512MB 80GB DVD+RW 17" Brightview, which gives these for the dimensions
    # Height: 1.85 in
    # Width: 10.94 in
    # Depth: 15.67 in
    # Weight 9.3 lbs
but on another site, it gives this for the dimensions
    15.7 by 11.3 by 2.1
and here is a pic of the bottom of the laptop (where should be my target area of cooling?)

As mentioned before, the Zalman is fine. I recommended the Amazon link specifically because -- while it is a few dollars more, literally, than other places -- it offers free shipping. It's deliberately designed in a way that causes most laptops' edges to "hang over," and that's fine. If your machine is too small, then that's fine too.

However, you can probably get the 1000, because it sounds like you have a 17 inch screen, not an actual 17 inch wide laptop.

The one area that feels super hot when you touch it

This isn't actually true, or not entirely so, at least. Although a specific area may feel hot to the touch, if there are no vents/fans there, blowing air against a solid surface won't do a whole lot. You'd want better airflow utilizing the actual ventilation system, which would in turn improve cooling inside the entirety of the machine.

    Yes, it's 17" widescreen

    It's 11" wide.

The 17" is measured diagonally of the screen. You can use a^2+b^2 = c^2 and knowing the screen ratio (16:10) to find the length and width of the screen. Add an inch for casing and bam.

kk, last couple of q's here before I decide on which to get.

First, what's the difference between the nc2000 and the nc1000?

And what are the opinions on these two coolers?

As mentioned earlier, the 1000 is the smaller version, while the 2000 is the bigger one. Now, to get on to the other questions...

The NZXT is more of a power hog, and hasn't decreased temperatures as well as the Zalman models. However, the Titan is actually pretty good, delivering performance about on-par with the Zalman units. It also has an AC adapter, which is nice (if you don't mind carrying it around with you while you're on the go).

So, I'd say go with a Zalman or the Titan.

Which is shown by the fairly weak improvements in that chart above, still its a nice 10-15c drop (or more if you are working in a hot environment).

I have the Zalman 1000, I would instead get one of the pads with 200mm+ fans instead of the dinky little 60-70mm fans that standard.

My fiancee has a Belkin for her laptop. It's great, it recently went out after 9 months. She contacted Belkin and they sent her a new one free of charge, when she gets the new one, they asked her to ship the old one back to them. That's great service.
