SE misplaced random accounts to scare people into buying the new security tokens

FFXI player who habitually shared account info hacked! Details at 11!
In all seriousness, what are the odds that this is some advanced super hacking technique rather than an isolated incident that occurred amongst a group of friends that are relatively comfortable sharing account info?
What if your friend gave out some info to a friend of his he trusted and they abused the trust? Would he fess up? Would he be too embarrassed to tell? There are so many more viable possibilities than a new super hack.
I mean with the name changing thing, that didn't even have to have happened right when the password was changed. Could have been done way before and you had no reason to check your account name so you didn't notice till it mattered.
Either way, just don't fucking share account info with anyone other than your significant other, and only if you TOTALLY trust them and don't expect them to divorce your bitch ass or break up with you. How hard is this basic lesson to learn?
PS2 limitations, thank goodness. My PC flaked during a power outage about 2 weeks ago, whew!
so what's the deal on this? something to be worried about?
Hello, I'm in Spekkio's, Tsuki's, Dithera's and Edimir's linkshell. The other person who got hacked is Jube who can't post here because of the 15 post rule.
Anyway, what happened to him is really scary... >.< Someone, other than himself locked the account. He logged in to find that it was locked, and when he called SE they couldn't confirm he was the owner because the credit card number had already been changed.
To quote his post on our forums:

*Edit: I forgot to note that another person in our linkshell was logged into by someone other than him. The funny thing is that it happened to only 2 of the 3 accounts he owns; One of them being his own, which was never logged-into, and the two others which once belonged to people who no longer play, which were logged-into by someone (he had them locked before they could be looted). It might have been that by some strange coincidence these two people who quit decided to log in on the same day, but that's unlikely considering it happened to others. This person also doesn't share his info.

well, I guess it's one of the following:
1 person's computer is infected and has logged in on all these characters within the infected time frame, thus resulting them all being from the same LS.
Their linkshell forums are infected with something that hasn't been detected.
One of them is profiting off their friends by RMTing all they can, and has the knowledge and programming skills to 'force' name changes.
Really nothing else it could be. I'm guessing it's the first or second thing, imo.
i know i know
leave your character gimp as hell, using all AF at merit camps, and under 500k in sellable items, so you aren't a target. To think, all those ppl in the wtf gimp thread are ahead of the curve.
also, seems those "PS2 Limitations" have the latent effect of preventing acct hacking
edit: also had a guy in my shell with 2-3 accts get hacked last week, got 2 back, but SE said 3rd was gone. working on the item restore now. He hadn't been on them in a while, he gave info to someone else for a lil bit. bet he won't anymore
There was actually a guy on my old LS vent that would pop in and out saying he could "clean" account information up using a program he had. Duno how much BS it was, but he was known for buying and flipping accounts / possibly scamming accounts on the RMT sites and changing the info so they could not be recovered.
After hearing him talk about it and seeing this post, it would not surprise me if this program got out.
People really need to read the post before they come in here with their autoreply of "dont share your account info lulz" People sharing their account info has NOTHING to do with the names on the server being changes. You cannot change the name on the account. But somehow if you share your account info, it lets the name on the account be changed... right? No.
SE can do an easy fix on this, as far as the POL account info being changed. Have all account info protected by a different password. Log into POL with one to get general character access, but all changes to Name, Credit Card, additional services (server transfer, expansion registration) only be accessible through a second password, that can't match the general log in password.
Sure, they can get your toon and clean it out, but they can't do anything beyond that.
Or just

then everyones account and information is protected.
