There haven't been an awesome fight since...Hawk, so that'd make what? 3? 4 years?

Nah, the Hawk fight had to be more like 10 or 11 years ago since it happened in the late 300's. There have been a couple of good fights since then, sadly none of the featuring Ippo, Takamura vs Eagle was good and Mashiba vs Sawamura was epic, unfortunately those are the only ones that come to mind right off the top of my head. I can't remember the last fight where it felt like Ippo and his opponent were pretty evenly matched, probably the second Sendo fight. It seems like since then Ippo's just been getting his ass kicked and wins by an ass pull or just dominates like the OHKO in his last fight.
It really feels like the series has been stuck in neutral for the last decade without any significant growth for the main character. I know that isn't true, but it's been so long since he won the Japanese championship and he hasn't done anything of note since then. That's part of the reason why the training/buildup scenes seem so much better than the fights these days.

Yeah, him putting the Dempsey Roll on hold while he trains and fights through the Asian champions has been pretty lame. When he finally goes beyond that and goes after Martinez for the world title, it'll hopefully be good.

Last Ippo fight I actually enjoyed was him versus Scratch J, his fights after that have been terrible. Takamura/Hawk was really the high point of the series but there have been a few choice bouts after that. Aoki's title match had me in tears with that move he invented.
I'm not that fond of Itagaki, I like the whole speed thing but he's just a very annoying character. Shit in this manga gets dragged out way too long so I don't even expect anything to come of the Ippo thing if he wins the Class A Tournament.

Sun-Ken Rock when it was in the short Italy arc, fucking lost it lol, one of the few manga's I've ever read that genuinely made me laugh my ass off. Volumes don't come out fast enough for this manga.
