It's not a money thing, I don't care if the token is $10 or $100. What's so disturbing is that SE probably realized sales for these things would be lackluster, especially considering everyone on 360 or PS2/3 would have no real use for it. Then they came up with something tantalizing in-game to attach to it and make everyone want to buy it regardless of their need for a security token, something that (as has been repeated several times in this thread) could have easily been released with their three mini-expansions. It's a bullshit, reactionary solution to two separate problems of not giving players enough storage space, and anticipating slow sales of the token.
