    zombie movie advice

seen 28 days later, 28 weeks later, play left 4 dead + dead rising + resident evils but i've never seen any of the old school zombie movies. (i.e. dawn of the dead etc)

in what order should i watch them? i have no idea when each takes place and when it was filmed, and amazon has a shit load of remakes and crap making it all the more confusing.

This depends on how you want me to sort them. If you're looking for time frames I can separate them. If you're just looking just to see what zombie movies are good and that you may enjoy, I can do that as well. But as it stands I'll make a quick list of my favorite zombie movies that most people seem to enjoy. I'll also include when they were made and if they are part of Romero's Living Dead universe.

Boy Eats Girl(2005) - This is an Irish zombie flick. It's not bad. The gore is fairly decent even though the plot is a bit transparent. It's still an enjoyable flick though. The title should let you know that it's a bit of horror/romance movie.

Dance of the Dead(2008 ) - A lower budget independent movie. Utterly fantastic. Lot's of violence, a ton of dark comedy. Essentially it's the people who couldn't make it to prom trying to save the town from zombies. Funny shit.

Dawn of the Dead(1978 ) - The second movie in the Romero universe. This is widely thought to be the arguably the best movie Romero has made. The comparisons and similarities between the living and dead are fantastic. The plot is very good and while there is a bit of overacting on the part of some the cast, but for the most part it's a fantastic movie that I've never gotten tired of.

Dawn of the Dead(2004) - While remaining close to the original plot of the first Dawn of the Dead, the remake was able to make an identity of it's own. The remake was done by one of Romero's former students Tom Savini(he was the character named Sex Machine in From Dusk Til Dawn and I know him personally.) The plot was well done and the actors were entirely believable in their roles. The violence was a bit excessive at one point, but still didn't detract from the film. One of the few times a remake almost surpasses the original.

Day of the Dead(1985) - This is the 3rd movie in George Romero's Living Dead universe. This is also Romero's personal favorite. I am not a fan of this movie. I actually liked the remake a little bit better, which isn't saying much. A lot of people love this movie. I'm not one of them. I think that this flick is entirely forgettable and not worth the money to be spent picking it up.

Day of the Dead(2008 ) - Basically a remake/reboot of the movie made in 1985. Not as terrible as the original, but still not a work of art. It's was enjoyable enough to rent.

Dead & Breakfast(2004) - Another extremely funny lower budget zombie movie. Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. It's campy and violent, but the interactions between the survivors is hilarious.

Cemetary Man(1994) - This is an absolutely fantastic movie. It's one of Rupert Everett's first movies. A very rare "thinking man's" zombie movie. The plot is extremely good and keeps you wondering the entire time you're watching it, right up to the end.

Diary of the Dead(2007) - Another Romero entry. This is filmed almost like a reality tv show. The plot isn't very strong, but the movie was still worth renting. Don't go in expecting an epic zombie story and you won't be too disappointed when you don't get it.

Fido(2006) - Very good movie about zombies being controlled by the living being used to do their mundane day to day tasks. One of them begins to act up and hilarity follows. Fairly gruesome, but also very funny.

Land of the Dead(2005) - Another Romero entry. This movie I really liked. It shows the world after the zombies have essentially destroyed it. Small pockets of humanity are still alive in what's left of cities but they now have to deal with slowly evolving zombies.

Night of the Livind Dead(1968 ) - Romero's first entry. Terrifying back when it first came out, it seems rather tame to people now. It's still worth watching to see the first real American zombie movie.

Night of the Living Dead(1990) - The remake of Romero's film made by Tom Savini. I enjoyed this much more than the original. This is one of the few movies I sit and watch whenever I see that it's on tv.

Quarantine(2008 ) - This is the remake of an Spanish zombie movie. I personally prefer the Spanish version over the US. But both of them are very well done and both give you some genuine scares.

Re-Animator(1985) - Fantastic movie that focuses on a depraved doctor who is controlling zombies to do his bidding. Very violent and not for those who are squeamish.

Return of the Living Dead(1985) - Extremely funny zombie flick. Fairly lower budget. The "zombies" don't stay true to Hollywood zombies where they actually speak and interact with humans. Despite the name Romero had nothing to do with this movie.

Shaun of the Dead(2004) - If you haven't seen this fantastic British horror/comedy do so immiediately.

Undead(2003) - An Aussie zombie movie. It has more elements of comedy but still manages to maintain a fair amount of gore and over the top no he didn't just do that violence.

The Zombie Diaries(2006) - Another British film. This movie is a bit of a knock off of Diary of the Dead. While there are zombies in the movie, this flick is more about the evil of human nature in a lawless society. Still a fairly decent movie.

Zombie(1978 ) - Arguably one the best zombie movies ever made. Exceptionally violent and morbid in general.

If you want anymore titles let me know and I'll try to sort out a few more for you.

Definitely gonna be checking some of these out. I've only seen a few that are on the list. Quarantine looked pretty cool.

A few of them are more along the lines of comedies with zombies in them. Which if the movie is well done(as Shaun of the Dead illustrates) they can blend together into an extremely entertaining movie. Dance of the Dead, Dead & Breakfast, Undead, Fido, and Return of the Living Dead were all able to pull this off without the movie getting lost inbetween the two genres.

Some movies to avoid at all cost unless you want to see a horrid movie are the following.

    Children of the Living Dead
Flight of the Dead: Outbreak on a Plane
    Shatterdead
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium

On a side note, there is one movie I forgot to add onto the top list. It's a Japanese movie named Versus. It involves a forest where the dead don't stay dead and involved the Yakuza etc. Very entertaining.

Rofl, I remember seeing Versus in high school. One of the Yakuza was fucking insane.. I think he was foaming at the mouth or something. That movie was ridiculous.

Versus is more of a Japanese Highlander + role Reversal than anything. But its still pretty cool in terms of style.

Don't watch Quarantine, just torrent the original, its called [REC]. It was also a Spanish film, not Italian. For those that haven't heard they wrapped shooting on the sequel this past December and is scheduled to be released this fall.

I've only seen the ending scene of [REC], but I watched Quarantine afterwards and the ending scene didn't seem half as good, is the original that much better?

How often does a US production rip off a movie and do it better?

Also fuck Land of the Dead. Good premise but the compassionate emo-twat zombies ruined it for me.
