Japanese developer tri-Ace (Star Ocean, Infinite Undiscovery) has launched a website with a countdown clock for a "new RPG project". The only catch?

Tri-Ace launched it today on April 1 in Japan — you know, the day when the internet turns to crapola. The countdown website features logos for the PS3 and Xbox 360 — typically, Japanese gag sites for April Fools day do not feature real product names. Check out the PrayStation 4table for reference.

Previously, Tri-Ace has developed titles for a myriad of platforms including the Super Famicom, the Game Boy, the PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, the Nintendo DS and most recently the Xbox 360 with role-playing-game Star Ocean 4.

Giving validity to the chances of this not being an April Fools Day joke, the reveal for the new RPG is next Friday when the countdown clock ends. Japanese magazine Famitsu goes on sale on Friday, so often new titles are announced them.

Granted, we're not ruling anything out. This is April Fools day, the day that the internet turns largely into crap. Though, creating a phony countdown clock only to announced a fake multi-platform tri-Ace game? If that's a prank, it's not funny.

If it's a game, then hey, we're all ears.

Don't really see what this has to do with FFXI, let alone advanced discussion. Post this in the gaming section.

Reason I posted is cause the damn statue looks altana-esque, could just be a cross platform type thing to connect peeps ala Fable 2 style and grind stuff.

    not anything new (i'm searching patents atm, tri-ace sucks as a search term), but if you wanted the website's preview image as a desktop here it is;

image totally ripped off from neogaf.

completely unrelated, i found Tri-Ace's "hidden" yet obviously under-used R&D website. although i just noticed at the bottom "Last Update 2009/03/31."

Yeah, same here. I did play IU, and wasn't impressed at all. I honestly don't see why Tri-Ace is so revered. The only game I ever liked from them is SO2, and that was 10 years ago. Playing through it on PSP changed my mind.

Star Ocean 1, 2, and Valkyrie Profile.

Also, they are somewhat responsible for the birth of the Tales series, although they don't work on it anymore. (Before tri-ace, there was a group named Wolf Team, who was the ones that made the first tales game: Tales of Phantasia, but after that they split up, some of them formed tri-ace, and some of the others probably went with Namco-Bandai or whoever the fuck)

    edit, courtesy of wikipedia

    Spoiler: show
Wolf Team ((株)ウルフチーム) is a now closed videogames developer studio founded in 1986 as part of Telenet Japan and was originally headed by Masahiro Akishino. Wolfteam became independent from Telenet in 1987, was reintegrated in 1990 and got merged with another Telenet subsidiary called Lasersoft, then was completely absorbed in an internal restructuring at Telenet in 1993 at which point most of the staff left together with Akishino.

The remaining staff were the then-very-young programmer Yoshiharu Gotanda, designer Masaki Norimoto, director Joe Asanuma, graphic artist Yoshiaki Inagaki, sound composer Motoi Sakuraba, and sound effect designer Ryota Furuya. Wolfteam went on to create games such as Sol Feace and Hiouden: Mamono-tachi tono Chikai, which faced weak sales due to Telenet's bad reputation. For Tale Phantasia, a game concept by Gotanda, they looked for an outside publisher with a better reputation.[citation needed]. After approaching Enix, Telenet struck a contract with Namco.

Namco, however, insisted upon many changes to the game, including renaming the title to Tales of Phantasia. The conflict over these changes pushed the game's release from 1994 into late 1995. Most of the initial staff left during this dispute and founded tri-Ace in early 1995.

To continue the lucrative arrangement with Namco to develop the Tales series, Telenet re-staffed Wolf Team and retained some other staff, such as Motoi Sakuraba on a freelance basis. They developed or co-developed nearly every game in the series until Wolf Team was renamed and under a new corporate identity Namco Tales Studio in early 2003, and Namco assumed majority ownership. In October 2007, Telenet filed for bankruptcy, and closed its doors, likely putting an end to the Wolf Team name.

I don't think you read it right, nowhere does it say this is an MMO. Just a multi-platform RPG, meaning a game on more than one console.

Here's your new game. Not a MMO. Looks like typical jrpg stuff.

    End of Eternity

Tri-Ace is teaming up with Sega for this one

You've got to feel sorry for Japanese developers with web countdowns. There are still more than two days to go on tri-Ace's newrpg.jp clock, but advance copies of Famitsu have spoiled the surprise as usual. The title in question has been revealed as End of Eternity, a collaboration between tri-Ace and Sega for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is reportedly 65% complete, and will be out this winter in Japan.

Representing tri-Ace's first project with any company other than Square Enix, End of Eternity looks to be a futuristic gun battle RPG in the vein of Parasite Eve. The game will take place entirely in a colossal machine-city called Burzel, whose millions of citizens subscribe to an (as yet unnamed) monotheistic religion. Director Takayuki Suguro points out that the player will never venture outside of Burzel in End of Eternity; what, if anything, exists beyond its borders is a mystery.

The Famitsu article reveals three characters: Vashyron, a 26 year old former soldier working for a private military company, 17 year old Zephyr, a boy scouted by Vashyron to work for his PMC, and a 19 year old girl known only as Experiment 20 -- an ominous moniker, as she's fated to die on her 20th birthday. Little more biographical info is found in the article, though the startling snippet of dialogue provided for hero Zephyr is worth noting: "The fact that I live is proof there is no God". Deep.

Gameplay appears to be somewhat untraditional for a JRPG: The field is built with hexes, recalling an old-school strategy game like Military Madness. Dungeons, however, play out in traditional third-person, and enemy encounters are seamless. In battle you'll control one of three maximum party members, participating in "semi-realtime" skirmishes with an emphasis on gunplay -- perhaps the feeling will be similar to Sega's own Valkyria Chronicles.

Trailer is gorgeous, but I don't think it's an MMO either (unless Tri-Ace/Sega has explicitly said?), but sounds like the fighting will be a nice throwback to the RPGs of yesteryear, hopefully all goes well with the storyline
