I'd venture to say that Aegis is in fact a waste of money unless your linkshell is farming PW and making attempts at AV on a regular basis.

It is pretty good for low-manning, but not nearly as much of an improvement as Excalibur. I'd take the sword first.

This. And I'll go as far as saying that every mob has a static recast on its spells, so if you're concerned about PW's instant-cast nukes you can just anticipate them by wearing magic damage reduction gear at the right moment.

Serious attempts that can't possibly end in wins aren't so serious, IMO. His wind-based attacks can be survived without an Aegis, Meteor can't be survived for prolonged periods of time regardless of what you're wearing.

They can be survived, but whatever makes your healers stress a lot less (It adds up over time) is good. I've seen Papy live through chainspell including Aeroga>Tornado 2>something else where a non aegis tank would have been a lot more stressed.

One of these Ragnaroks should do some testing and find out what the innate Ragnarok crit bonus is (on birds), then what the Scourge boost is (on birds).

I have to say that I'm starting biased against GS, but if someone can prove it doesn't suck I'm more than willing to listen.

Scourge is 10% (I parsed a Valhalla on several occasions in Dynamis), but I'm not sure what the innate bonus is.

I know its just semantics, but I'm more inclined to believe that it turns sloppy paladins into bearable ones, and simply saves some inventory space for ones that are already excellent.

My above average PLD (I don't have any rare reduction gear like Defending Ring, Hauticlaire, Minerva's Ring, etc...) can tank AV fine. Aegis only lets you swap in a few pieces of MDB over MDTA, which amounts to very little when you add in other support such as Bar/MDB Roll, etc... And for the record, I've solo tanked through AV's Chainspell fine.

I give my grats to anyone who upgrades the Shield because it's still a nice piece, but it's got a reputation it doesn't deserve.

I've never tanked PW or seen the fight, but what pieces of physical reduction can you use in places where you'd put MDTA? (Considering Jelly Ring isn't an option.)

Funny you mention it. Jelly could be an option, why not? Assuming you idle in Odin's gear or you have a Defending Ring.

Unless MDT caps at 50%, and then deducts Jelly's -5% for some reason. Could be, I don't know.

From what I've seen the cap is applied after, so you're probably right.

To the whole Aegis-Is-Needed-For-PW. A few months ago, Neosutra posted Pheonix's attempt on PW. Our tanks were Myself (Aegis), Neosutra (Aegis) and Mrhomie (Koenig)

At the time, Neo and Homie had/were standing in -Phys. Damage Taken Gear (Haute for Homie, Both Neo and Homie have 2/2 Val) while I used a standard Acc/Haste with Joy. (Neo was using Joy also). Over all the forms, the only one that Aegis really really saved my ass would be Gurfurlur. Other than that one form, Homie did just as well as either Aegis PLD. They'd have to come on here to post their own idle sets for the fight though.

All and all, No, even from an Aegis POV, it's not needed for PW. At least not for the pre-true form stage, as our final form strat was a zerg method so.. yeah.
