Download and install Winterboard from Cydia. Then download some themes from Cydia: go to sections > Themes... there should be plenty of categories (Complete or Springboard have a lot that will be the bigger complete themes) even with the starting sources I think. Pick a category, find a theme that looks interesting (or google for some good choices and just search in Cydia) and download one.

After you choose one, go open the Winterboard app and put a checkmark next to the one you got, and press the home button. Voila. I think Winterboard settings are applied in a priority from top to bottom (not sure), so if you need to move it, I think you select the setting / checkmark it and then grab it on the right and drag it where you need it.

More advanced themeing can be done by SSHing themes directly into your phone. This is also how you could modify themes and add icons, etc. If you want to do that, I can find a guide somewhere probably.

I just got a refurb 16gig iphone 3g for 99.99$ going to see if I can make it work. Got to wait for it to come in the mail. If it doesn't work, oh well I resell it on ebay for 350+$.

$30 for internet use it just stupid, I don't know how they can justify that price. What does it actually cost them for us to use the internet? Don't even get me started on 25$ for texting...

What's worse is that most people are actually using Wi-Fi the vast majority of the time and AT&T knows it. This is one of the few cases where I'd actually prefer a model of Internet access where I pay for my usage instead of a monthly fee, I'd bet it would be drastically lower with how often I have access to Wi-Fi that's actually far better than 3G anyways (home, friends, relatives, school, etc.)

Exactly. The only time wifi probably won't be available is when I am flying down the freeway.. but then, that's a great time to check my email, right?

Could probably connect to a McDickies just long enough to log on anyways.

What's the best case for the iPhone? I am thinking about getting the otterbox.

    OtterBox Impact Case for iPhone 3G 3Gs 8GB 16GB 32GB - eBay (item 180388161133 end time Aug-23-09 22:43:01 PDT)

11.90$ free shipping, doesn't come with the belt clip thingy. Anyone have opinions on this case, or recomend a different one?

I just couldn't convince myself a case was worth it. No matter how nice they are, an iPhone without a case always looks and feels better to me because of its smaller profile. So I opted to just get a film protection system. I went with Invisible Shield's full body setup, but in retrospect I wish I had gone with the Fullbodyfilms one, as I ended up screwing up the installation of the front piece for invisible shield and buying a power support crystal film to replace it anyways, which looks better and was easier to put on imo. Fullbodyfilms screen protector is basically the same as the power support one and their whole setup is cheaper than Invisible Shield as well.

Anyways, now that I finally got all the films on and am relatively satisfied with how they sit, I'm definitely happy I went with films over a case. First of all, they really are almost invisible. The screen protector I got is particularly hard to see, zero bubbles or dust particles under it at all, so you can only know its there by looking at the edges around the holes. The back installation isn't perfect so you can tell its there, (and the texture of the invisible shield is pretty apparent) but its still pretty hard to see.

Of course they have very little drop protection, but I'm not particularly clumsy so I'm not too worried about that. I was far more worried about scratches, and these films are great for protecting against that. I initially thought it would just be protecting the phone body and the scratches would be apparent on the protectors which I'd have to replace, but thats not the case. The scratches are like invisible on this material, so its even better. Overall, definitely happy I went with films.

I have the Otterbox holy shit is it bulky. Can probably stop a bullet but It really impairs the experience. that and not to mention the screen gets all blotchy because of finger oil.

So I guess Navigon recently released their Navi System for the iPhone. Supposed to be what everyone has wanted, but 70$ and 1.3g install is pretty ridiculous for something that should of been stock

I have been browsing around trying to find an easy to follow guide for jailbreaking/unlocking, and I found one. It might have been posted but I haven't seen it so I am going to link it anyways.

Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G/3GS 3.0.1 IPSW using Windows - Wifisignals.net

Spoiler contains guide if you don't want to click link.

    Spoiler: show
This guide is for windows users that want to jailbreak/unlock their iPhone 3G or 3GS.

3.0.1 firmware fixes the sms bug found in Apples 3.0 firmware. It is very important to upgrade to 3.0.1 if you are currently using 3.0 firmware.

This is for upgrading and jailbreaking 3.0.1 firmware Only. Currently 3.0.1 is the newest firmware for the iPhone. In the future be sure not to upgrade to a newer firmware until a guide is posted for that firmware version.
UPDATE!!! 7/08/09 Redsn0w now works with 3GS!!! Make sure you have redsn0w 0.8 like described in this guide.
UPDATE!!! 7/01/09 Apple has released the beta firmware version 3.1. Jailbreakers/Unlockers do not load 3.1 on your iPhone or you will loose your unlock.

Reasons to Jailbreak your iPhone are
    1. You want to run 3rd party apps on your iPhone
    2. You want to Unlock your iPhone to be used with other services such as T-Mobile.

To unlock your iPhone it must be Jailbroke first.
Currently this is done with software called RedSn0w 0.8
RedSn0w 0.8 will jailbreak your iPhone so you can install 3rd party apps.
Once RedSn0w 0.8 is installed you can then install a third party app called UltraSn0w to unlock your iPhone so it can be used with other providers such as T-Mobile.

Step 1. Download redsn0w-win_0.8 Once the file has downloaded right click on the zip file and choose extract all.

Step 2. Make sure you have iTunes 8.2 If not get it here.

Step 3-A. Download 3.0 for 3G iPhone or 3.0 for 3GS iPhone. You need this file because Redsn0w 0.8 does not support 3.0.1 however since 3.0.1 and 3.0 are basically the same firmware you can point redsn0w to the 3.0 ipsw for the needed verification. When Redsn0w is updated to work with 3.0.1 this guide will be updated for the newer version of Resn0w.
If you already have this file on your pc there is no need to download it again.

    Step 3-B. Download 3.0.1 for iPhone 3G or 3.0.1 for iPhone 3GS

If these files downloads as a .zip files and not a .ipsw Do not try to unzip it. Rename the file only changing .zip to .ipsw.

Step 4. Check your iPhone's firmware version. To do this go to Settings > General > About and look at the version #. If it says 3.0.1 skip steps 5 and 6 going straight to step 7. If it is not 3.0.1 but is a lower version number continue to step 5.

Step 5. Open iTunes and connect your iPhone to your PC. iTunes should see your iPhone. It will be listed under devices. Click on your iPhone in the devices menu. If iTunes tells you invalid sim either place a At&t sim card in your iPhone (It does not matter if its activated or not.) or jailbreak your iPhone using the jailbreak for the version you have. Remember if you had 3.0.1 firmware in step 3 you skip this step and go straight to step 7.

If your iPhone is stuck on the apple logo or iTunes will not recognize your iPhone do this.
Leave iTunes open and leave the cable plugged into your iPhone but unplug it from your pc. Hold down the power button and the home button until your screen goes blank. Release the power button but continue to hold down the home button and plug your iPhone into your pc. Keep holding the home button for 20-30 seconds. iTunes will see your iPhone and prompt you to restore.

Step 6. If your firmware version was 2.X or lower in step 4 hold down the shift key and click restore.
If your firmware version was 3.0 in step 4 hold down the shift key and click Update.
Browse to the 3.0.1 IPSW (Be sure to choose the 3.0.1 ipsw and not the 3.0 ipsw) file that you downloaded in step 3 and select Open. The install process will begin. Let it complete fully. Your iPhone will reboot. Close iTunes.

Step 7. Locate the unzipped file from step 1 named redsn0w-win_0.8. Open it and run the exe file named redsn0w.

Step 8. You will be prompted to select the corresponding IPSW for your current firmware. Click Browse and locate the 3.0 IPSW file that you downloaded in step 3. (be sure to choose the 3.0 ipsw and not the 3.0.1 ipsw as Redsn0w 0.8 does not recognize 3.0.1)

Step 9. Redsn0w will verify the file. Once verified click Next.

Step 10. Redsn0w will prompt you to choose Cydia and/or Icy. Check Cydia only. Click Next. Installing both Cydia and Icy may cause problems.

Step 11. Redsn0w will prompt you with instructions to leave your iPhone plugged in and turn it off. Once your iPhone is completely Off and still plugged in to your pc click Next.

Step 12. You will be prompted to hold the power button for 3 seconds.
Then without releasing the power button hold it and the home button down for 10 seconds. Next release the power button but keep holding down the home button for 30 seconds. Redsn0w will start jailbreaking your iPhone. If not click back and start over at step 10.

Step 13. You will notice your iPhone will start installing files. Once Redsn0w says Done click Finish. Leave your iPhone alone at this time it will reboot when finished. Once your iPhone has rebooted it will be jailbroke.

Step 14. If your firmware version was 3.0 in step 4 you should have chose "Update" in step 6. If so you are done jailbreaking your iPhone and can go to step 15 if you want to unlock it to work with other providers such as T-Mobile. If you chose "Restore" in step 6 follow the instructions for firmware version 2.X below.

If your firmware version was 2.X or lower in step 4 you should have chose "Restore" in step 6 and you will need to setup your iPhone as a New iPhone in iTunes. Open iTunes. iTunes will ask you to setup as new phone or to restore from backup. When upgrading from 2.X or lower to 3.0.1 it is very important that you choose setup as new phone.Once complete disconect your iPhone from your PC.

Step 15. For this step you will need wifi access on your iPhone. To connect to your wifi network select Settings > Wifi on your iPhone. Under choose a network select on your network. If your are running a secure network you will be prompted to enter the network password or key and click join. Once connected continue to the next step.

Step 16. Click the Home button and locate Cydia. You may have to scroll to the next screen to find it. Click the Cydia icon. It will display "reorganizing Will close automatically when done."

Step 17. Open Cydia again. If you get the Waiting for activation msg just dismiss it. You will be prompted with "Who Are You" Choose User (Graphical Only)

Step 18. Cydia will start loading and will reload data. You will be prompted to upgrade. Choose Upgrade Essential and confirm. The upgrade process will start. when finished you will be able to click Close Cydia (Restart)

Step 19. Once Cydia is closed click the Cydia icon again. When Cydia opens click the Manage tab.

    Step 20. Click on Sources.

Step 21. Click on the Edit tab

Step 22. click on the Add tab.

Step 23. Enter ultrasn0w.com and click Add Source. Make sure the o in sn0w is a zero and not the letter o

Step 24. The sources will update and Cydia will reload the data. Once finished click Return to Cydia.

    Step 25. Click Done

Step 26. Click the search tab and search for ultrasn0w. When Cydia pulls it up click on it.

Step 27. Click install on ultrasn0w. Click Confirm. Ultrasn0w will install and Cydia will reload the data. When done click return to Cydia.

Step 28. Power off your iPhone. If you need to install a different sim install it while your iPhone is powered off.

Step 29. Power on your iPhone.

Step 30. Reset your network settings. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Step 31. Enjoy your jailbroke and unlocked iPhone.

The Dev Team suggests turning off 3G for T-Mobile users in the US. To do this go to Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G OFF

I hope this guide helps and is easy to understand. This guide is closed. If you have comments or questions about this guide please post them here.

All credit for guide goes to Bl0ckh3ad of wifisignals.net at the above link. I have not altered this guide in any way and want to make sure he is completely recognized for his great guide.

Hopefully someone else finds this guide as useful as I did! I know there's one in the OP but I was having a hard time following it and this one includes links to all files needed for jailbreaking 3.0.1.

Oh I didn't see this link there, guess I missed it. The guide in my spoilers doesn't link to the 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW files to download, but if you click the link it does.

That was the main reason I liked this guide because since I just got my phone I didn't already have a 3.0 IPSW restore file to use for jailbreaking, and wasn't sure where to get it at.

I installed itype fastr and after pressing "reload springboard", the middle of the screen just says ok with little bars circling it, and it's been like that for over 10mins. Should I be concerned? Because I am starting to worry lol..

No one has mentioned this as far as I have seen for tethering. Quck guide litteraly takes < 3mins to trick your phone into allowing internet tethering and MMS.
