Luckily I had professors who could teach their way out of a paper bag. 'Critical thinking' in a broad sense, is the ability to doubt information, even that which you've held all your life.

You paranoid paultards do realize that volunteering is compulsory for graduation for a lot of our nations high schools? Who would've thought that helping other people could be such an anathema

Actually that sounds like the bill that's been floating around for 20+ years and that Republicans used back in 2002-08 to falsely claim that Dems were "bringing back the draft". It was probably revised to add much more to the available volunteerism opportunities while the compulsory part was overlooked. IIRC it was a choice between two years of civil volunteerism or two years of military service, but yeah it was mandatory to choose one or the other.

It is kind of how like God gives us free will where we get to make whatever choice we want. As long as we might the right choice we won't be punished eternally for it.

Or how the basics of medical/psychological treatment is informed consent, yet the government will order people in to treatment programs where they have to consent or face severe punishment.

Or how a mugger can put a knife to your throat and tell you not to scream and you agree not to scream.

Certain amount of irony in that when people apply lame slippery slope arguments to your conservative ideals you brush them off as silly.

This argument reminds me of when one city put into a plan where people collecting welfare were given work positions where they worked part time in order to collect their check. Small jobs, it was designed to give them some work experience to assist them in getting a "real" job. They rebelled, saying it was akin to slavery. HOW DARE THEY WORK FOR THEIR FREE MONEY!

Whatever. This law simply asks people that take some kind of public assistance (education grants etc) to participate in some kind of community service. I hardly think that is a bad thing, and I'm pretty conservative politically.

That's not where that ends, that's not even where that begins. In no way shape or form, what you described above, fits into whats being passed.

edit: I also wanna add, for hilarity's sake "OR MY NAME ISN'T GUARTZ"

In college, the press for service continues; students will be urged to perform substantial community service in exchange for educational grants.

    -_-

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part where you're held at gunpoint while you pick up trash in a public park or help out in a soup kitchen

You are describing a work for school program that most colleges already have.

What part of civilian service for $$ a.k.a "volunteer programs" don't you understand?

I think it's a bad idea to tie in a substantial amount of education-related public assistance to service requirements. Some people just want to get an education...

    guartz shut the fuck up.

I for one hope the Marxist Obama administration sends you to the harshest FEMA concentration camp where you and Glenn Beck can have a circle jerk with Rush after the libruhls destroy Amurika with this veiled attempt to take our liberties by making poor college kids volunteer.
