He said he wanted to buy a HIGH END CARD and SLI/CROSSFIRE for FFXI........ pretty sure that he specifically wanted to put out $400+ on a card JUST for FFXI...

I'm sure if he played any other demanding games he'd have mentioned it by now. If that is the case, and he does want to run crysis or something else at full specs, then by all means spend the 400.

My idea = Highend card + FFXI = FPS 30 in all areas.

This seems not to be the case.
Well here's the deal.. FFXI's graphics spec is such that it's based more on the speed of your processor than the video card. I'm not saying a good video card won't help your gameplay or your FPS - it will because it will take load off your CPU and allow it to concentrate on other things. But at a certain point the GPU won't make a difference anymore in anything but draw distance.

As for specific cards, if you want the lowest end card that is still really good, that would be an 8800GT on the nVidia side, or a 4850 for a Radeon. If you want something mid-priced that will play other newer games with great results, go with either a GeForce GTX260 (make sure it's the core216 version) or a 4870.

I was a huge Nvidia fan, but how surprised was I when I bought this shiny.
That is a great card to get if you want the bling factor or want to play Crysis on highest settings. It's not the fastest card out there though. At the moment that would be the GeForce GTX295. If/when a dual-GPU version of the new 4890 comes out though that'll probably take the top spot.

    Allow me to clarify...

As this is the site i frequent the most when in search of FFXI information I post questions pertaining to FFXI. Yes in regards to my post i can see how one can make the assumption that i want to purchase the most expensive card their is because i only play FFXI. But that is not the case as my current setup plays anything including any games that i can toss at it with better than average FPS for my taste.

Only one exception, FFXI and its 30fps that seem to be negotiable depending on the area your in.
Hence if i were purchase a high end video card i would at least like it to run FFXI at 30fps without it dropping. Knowing full well that my other games will benefit from the upgrade as well, if this was the case.

Unfortunately its not and because I am perfectly comfortable with my existing setup i see no benefit to an upgrade at the moment.

Again i appreciate the feedback in regards to Video Cards and FFXi.

    ^^

Ehh.. FFXI is funny. There's some conditions where, no matter how good your computer is, you're just not gonna get more than 15-20fps. Besieged, certain types of weather, or places where there's a lot of summoner avatars about. I managed to get 25+ fps in whitegate without a problem with high graphic settings by tweaking the registry and softly overclocking.

you are not going to see any difference in ffxi no matter what you do to your computer if those are your computer specs.

and I know you mentioned it, but my god i hope you really do play crysis or something other than FFXI with that computer or I feel bad for it.

I'd use that sweet setup for some action packed Minesweeper.

edited before I pull a Kiro lol

If you play other demanding games, then sure, upgrade your card. You are running an expensive setup and it doesn't seem like 400$ would really be that much to you. But really, there isn't much a reason to. I'd wait till a new series of cards comes out.
