Well, based on my experience living here, the event of "fire alarm ringing" and "there's actually a fire somewhere" are mutually exclusive, so I feel much safer when I hear the alarm.

Also, there's a fire station about a 5 minute walk from here, so when there is a real fire, I usually hear sirens within a minute of it starting. This alarm is really getting on my nerves though.
