I think the original series did a better job of developing Hughes' character. It emphasized more on how he always doted on his family constantly and would take every single opportunity to show the pictures to everyone (even when he was blatantly changing the subject). It also gave more examples of how he supported Mustang throughout their career.

Brotherhood contained both of these elements, but I don't think Hughes got nearly as much screen time.

They'd probably do that if the first series didn't exist, but Brotherhood seem to try and eliminate redundancy by getting through the first few arcs as quickly as possible.

Most likely, yeah. As a whole, the series benefited a lot from that move, but that aspect and probably the character development of Ed and Al's sensei (can't remember her name) suffered.

I agree with Zilong's point on that, makes sense anyhow. Does the manga expand on the relationships to that degree the way they did in the first series as well? The first animated series has a much smaller cast of characters so it seems natural to put a greater focus and expand the relationships of each person more, while the second series involves a lot more people, but still manages to make them memorable in some way. I know some who don't like brotherhood or the manga because of that and actually favor the first series. Personally I like both takes.

The first 26 or so episodes of the original series are more or less straight from the manga (some stuff being added like the girl Dante took over working for Yoki, the other Elric Brothers, etc). Other things were changed too, like the whole affair on the train and meeting with the guy who turned his daughter into a chimera did happen, but Ed's already a state alchemist in the manga instead of being before. I definitely felt Hughes got more backstory than was given in this series, but that might 've been me remembering things from the first series. It's been a while since I've read that far back to be honest...

One thing I do remember was that you got a lot more of Hughes, and everyone in Ishbal for that matter, in the manga. I think it was a few issues (4 maybe?) telling the perspectives of Ed talking with Hawkeye, Al talking with the doctor.. I think there was at least 1 if not 2 others, so it gave a much fuller backstory there.

I thought the same. I remember it hitting much harder the first time at Hughes' funeral, and figured it was because the connection with his character was quite a bit deeper the first time. I guess the shock-factor also had something to do with it.

I think both series are definitely worth watching for surprisingly different reasons.

It's.. not eclipse or tmd..so I'm wondering how it will be. Will end up dl'ing the other one when they become available anyway.

-edit; watching it now, seems perfectly fine until a later version comes out... and holy shit at Mustang, his brokeness and badassery knows no limits, I love it.

Going to have to agree with you here. No anime has ever kept me so interested after 50+ episodes. As I've said before, it'll be sad when it's all over, but man what a ride it has been. I keep up with the manga, and there is still so much greatness to come.

No episode ever feels like a waste. Every character no matter how little usually gets their moment to shine too. Even if only briefly, like Yoki.

This is one of the things that I enjoy about it so much. Any other anime I've ever watched has so many times when I'm disappointed because it's an episode about "boring character x", of which there were often many.

Whether it was Alphonse, Ed, Mustang or the Armstrongs, it's all set up so perfectly. This is really rare for not just anime, but any show.

I used to think that I preferred ongoing shows, but if shows that have a preset ending can be this good, I think I may just be changing my mind.

Hell the fuck yea at Armstrong kickin ass, where was this when he was battling his sister.
And Mustang was "this" close to snapping.

Knowing Olivier, wouldn't really put it past her to condition Armstrong with fear during their childhood for him to really put up a fight against her.

And there is that whole part where Armstrong put the 2 and 2 together in Olivier's motive in evicting the family.

Gonna be kinda sad when the Sloth fight finishes, but the epic don't stop, and I can't wait to watch the rest of the endgame fight animated.

I usually dont find myself watching older episodes of other animes but i really like this one. Somewhat off topic, does anyone know where i can download/torrent all of the episodes (fansubs) up to the current ones?
