    See the thing that was bothering me was that if he gave up his actual knowledge then he wouldn't be able to help Al do research on separating Khimerias. Chances are it is just a translation quirk and he remember how to do alchemy just can't do it.

    He traded his gate for his brother. He still KNOWS how to use alchemy and study it, he just can't. Without the gate inside of him it's impossible.

    I thought it was pretty simple. Ed gave up his ability to slap alchemy together. I'm sure he can probably draw circles.

    He can draw all the circles he wants, it's not going to do him any good. He can't perform any alchemy at all. Otherwise he would've done that instead of getting up on the roof to fix it.

    As Dantrag said, he still knows all about alchemy and how it's done. He's just physically unable to do it anymore due to sacrificing the gate itself.

    Exactly. Everyone that exists has a gate inside of them. The difference is, very few have actually seen the gate (and those can do the transmutations without circles), while the rest need the circles. The thing is, Ed doesn't have a gate at all, meaning he can't do alchemy. He can keep his tons and tons of knowledge about it, sure.. but he can't actually perform a transmutation.

    Well he mentioned he was on his last legs as it is when he offered himself to save Al, but Ed found another way. So I guess he just traveled back to sit with his wife and be with her one more time before he passed.

    If I had to guess how the final animated episodes will go:

    The third to last episode will end with Al's handclap or Ed getting his arm back. The first half of the second to last episode will end with the 'death' of father (or Ed kneeling beside Al) and it will conclude with Ed meeting Al with his real body. The final one will begin with both of them returning and then the epilogue.

    That should allow for ~15 minutes to show the epilogue.

    Wow, never mind that. I didn't realize the anime was still on chapter 104/108. It's going to be hard to compress that all into three episodes if they want to keep the epilogue. :\
