Sonic's not even a bad character, even with his worse placement on the tier list he's way more tournament viable than some other characters.

The reason some characters arent tournament viable in brawl is because the best players with the best characters rape certain matchups. Olimar is an 8-2 on ike but I still beat one in tournament, and that very same olimar beat my snake (barely) just yesterday. In the same tournament my ike beat a snake, my snake and ike both beat 2 different dededes, and my snake beat a wario. The only matchup that is remotely even in the ones I mentioned was the ike/snake one and that's only in the eyes of ike players, a lot snakes are dead convinced they rape the matchup. There's honestly more to a game with no guarantees, which do NOT get me wrong, does not mean brawl is deeper than SF. You get your setup, you get your combo, you back the hell off to start the exchange again or you wait for them to get up and you pressure them some more. You're not going to find things like aerial combat being prominent in that game, nor are you going to worry about things like transcendental priority. Things like counters being unique to characters make them worthy of being banned, and concepts like invincibility frames flat out break a character to the point of being banned in some places.

SF4 is by no means bad but character potential is far from the reason the game appeals to people.

From what I've heard, tier lists and character rankings change constantly in Brawl. Sure some characters like C. Viper will jump from the bottom to the top with the discovery of viable combo strings, but the game is fairly even for a fighting game. Sure it might not be the reason people fall in love with SF4, but it will certainly help keep them playing.

And I really don't understand SF4's appeal. I was never a fan of fighting games but I can't get enough of Balrog/Abel. I'm actually entertaining the idea of taking a trip down to a local ranbat tournament at the end of this month.

Meta knight, snake, game and watch, dedede, and falco have consistently been on top since pretty much 2 months into the game for what is almost a year (I see falco going down as time progresses and pikachu taking his place though). The biggest changes were olimar and diddy, 2 obviously broken characters, finally being acknowledged as such because people stopped being fucking dumb about things that are avoidable (a game with infinite air dodges and people are really talking about a character with a frame 1 super armor being gimped, it's silly) and marth moving up because people got over the fact that he wasnt straight retarded like he was in melee and finally played him seriously. Some characters get moved up because viable strings/combos are found (pikachu's probably going to move up because he straight bullies every good character in the game) while some hit their peak because of debilitating weaknesses (wario for example). All in all though the tier list is about the same as it was with a few notable exceptions but that comes from players finally using good characters to their real potential. People arent getting hit by things they shouldnt be getting hit by so the ridiculous stuff like chain grabs to spikes are starting to become far less viable.
