    Unlocking the Iphone

So ive decided it is time to set my phone free. I had a few questions however and wanted some input from people that have unlocked their Iphone.

Once your Iphone is unlocked, are you pretty much unable to get apps/music/vids from Itunes?

What are some good sites for Iphone unlocking software, and some recommended programs to go along with it?

    Any other advice/info?

I think you're really looking for info about jailbreaking, as unlocking = using other phone companies.

When you have a jailbroken phone, you can still use and buy apps/music/vids from itunes.

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 3G iPhone Using QuickPwn (Windows)

the program they link to is idiot-proof and once it is jailbroken every "legit" thing still runs the exact same way. it will start to slow down if you customize the UI too much though. it can always be restored right in itunes to how you first got it too.

the only downside to jailbreaking your phone is, because of the terrible non-existant warranty that comes with the iphone, if your phone develops a hardware issue that isn't caused by the user (i.e. the screen just dies, or the flash memory becomes corrupted or some other internal problem), and you need to send it in, they'll most likely see that you jailbroke the phone if they're able to actually get the device running again, and thus they'd basically tell you to screw off due to you violating the warranty by jailbreaking it

if something does start happening to your phone and you determine it's probably hardware failure, restore it as soon as possible before it becomes unrestorable, and then return it for a replacement

As long as I have been posting on BG, I have to say our search function sucks nuts, as I knew that there were other posts Q.Q.

That or I am just not using it properly. (Most likely).

However, I wonder if it would be better to wait till OS3 is out for the iPhone?

I try not to upgrade firmware unless something really important comes out. For instance, I bought my phone with 1.1.3 installed, and kept that all the way until 2.2 came out (which had some pretty clutch updates). I plan on getting 3.0 a couple weeks after it comes out because there's always some glitches that lead to 3.0.1, 3.0.2, and so forth. The thing with upgrading firmware on a jailbroken iPhone is that you can't just easily do it through iTunes, you need to restore the damn phone, losing your pictures/videos/music and everything (at least is the case with mine, which is jailbroken and unlocked).

As for the procedure on how to do it, that iClarified site linked is very good, as is ModMyi. That site not only posted the latest in guides and releases, but very important iPhone news, both on the legit and notsolegit side.

3.0 is going to be pretty damn nice, I have a beta of it through the developer program and I really like what they've done. About all I can say >_> lol

As for jailbreaking, what are you mainly wanting from it, just to run homebrew apps?

Check the link I posted, the iphone thread is now stickied, and it will link you to quickpwn's site which does the jailbreaking for you. There is no guides or things you need to read, the program you download from quickpwn walks you through it while doing it for you, it's a joke how easy it is.

Download quickpwn > run quickpwn > plug in iphone > follow steps while it jailbreaks it for you

    Done in 6ish minutes.

Yes, when you update to a new firmware with a jailbroken phone, you lose all your stuff on your phone........ but Itunes creates backups, and well, thats what itunes is for... it just takes a little longer to upgrade a firmware, not really a problem.

    @Raineer:
Whether he is going to make full use of a jailbreak, no use, or partial use, there is no reason not to do it since you have access to much more, and dont lose anything by doing so.

I'll add this thread to the sticky.

When i update a new firmware, I have to restore my phone, does that mean a fresh instal of ipwn, or will ipwn remain on it Q.Q?

Was kinda under the impression I would have to wait for a newer version of Ipwn to come out, that was compatible with 3.0.

As for what im looking to do: home brew apps, cpu wireless tethering, and some other jazz.

There are already people working on quickpwn for 3.0, it'll be out pretty much simultaneously with 3.0OS.

When you update to new firmware yeah you lose your quickpwn and such, and have to upgrade to the newest version of quickpwn always available at their website.

Use that thread for any further discussion, got it stickied for a reason! There is a link to a thread with apps in it and such, add to the main thread if you find new ones so you don't necro those.

Got my phone in the mail today. So far everything is great, except itunes is just as awful now as it was 2 years ago when I used it last. Is there any way to add songs to the iphone with out having to remove all songs and add them all again?

Edit: Wow this wasn't the thread I thought it was... accidental necro bump

Not sure what you mean? When I upgraded from my 3G to 3GS I just hook it up and sync. All the songs were added to the new phone without having to remove songs from itunes and re-adding...

No it keeps removing the songs from the phone then readding them again. Not from itunes, from my phone itself.

I think I figured it out though, not 100%.

Sounds like you have auto-sync turned on in iTunes. Turn it off.
