You should contact her again and say "I'm sorry there's a $200 fee to use western union - could you paypal me $200 to cover the costs so I can send you the $4000 back?"

I've heard of this working sometimes. Then if they come through with the paypal, Western Union them 4 cents or something just for the kick in the balls.

would paypal be the best way to scam them back? or is there another avenue I should try?

It's 2009 and people are still new to the Nigerian 419 scam?

Throw away the money order, forget you ever heard from these people. You will only get into more shit.

    GG

Should I angry e-mail this girl, or just not talk to her again? Also loldrama in this thread somehow?
cant believe you actually took a check she gave you to be cashed...as soon as western union was mentioned you should have known

Well no shit, but if it did turn out to be legit then I would have had a subleaser and no problems, why wouldn't I try to see if they were real before disregarding them completely? It's not like I can get in trouble from it either way, best to hope for the better scenario instead of the shittier one.

I understand the scenario, but how would they scam you? I don't understand. If you cashed the check and decided not to give anything back until it cleared then you'd just redeposit the money and file a police report wouldn't you? Or is there something I'm missing. I understand that if you cashed it and mailed it then you'd be scammed.

Um, just putting this out there as a logical answer:

    $4350 = 1400*3 + (300/2)

So, three months rent at $1400/mo plus half the subletter fee, which maybe got mistaken as a security deposit?

That seems pretty logical to me.

You're getting scammed and you should be smarter than that. If you seriously want to keep some of the funds then just be prepared for the legal consequences there on after. Plus,
excess balance urgently through - Google Search

you've just made google. Turn the money in and report the user to the proper authorities. 4k isn't a lot of money.
