I think its just a matter of getting more bang for your buck with free weights than with the machines. Both give you an isolated workout to whatever area it is your working on but free weights also help strengthen your stabilizing muscles and your core(on some workouts).

For anyone reading this, please don't listen to him. Sorry to be disrespectful, but seeing as how you think Smith Machines "suck hard", you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

Yes, free weights give you a slight advantage based on the fact that they employ more stabilizer muscles. However, this is not a big deal, and is not important to 99.9% of the population. I'm pretty sure you're not playing a professional sport or trying to be Mr. Olympia (those people even use them at times). So, if you feel comfortable on a Smith Machine, absolutely go for it.

If you're going to give out advice, don't bullshit people that might actually read what you are saying, and follow your "instruction".

strength is important? Hit training does fuck all for strength and does loads for hypertrophy.

Decided to start working more proactively on getting in shape this week.. I'm not exactly in bad shape; 5'9, 165lb (was 200 last december and vowed to get in better shape, so ate healthier, got outside more often, etc)... I did the '100 pushup test' and my initial test was 20, which apparently, is pretty good, for never doing them..

So I go outside to go for a run today.. bad idea. I haven't run in MONTHS (like, 6+) and I just kinda took off- I stretched, drank water etc beforehand, but in about a half mile I was beat. I walked about a half mile, then had to take a seat, then ran another half mile, and walked another half mile back home.. and just felt DEAD. I don't feel crappy now, which surprises me, so I may do it again tomorrow- just sucks because in high school (~4 years ago now) I was running miles under 6 minutes.

Yeah, I'm a smoker. I'm cutting that out ASAP. Bleh.

Not really sure how best to get back 'in shape', I figure just running every day, but not sure if just going for a jog or whatever will do it, I donno.

It all depends what kind of "Shape" you're looking to be in. If you are looking for a leaner, more cardiovascular-intensive athleticism, then you're going right on course. Just remember to stretch, stay well-hydrated and keep your goals reachable, but always moving gradually up in difficulty.

The smoking is going to make it harder. Not gonna lie to you and tell you it can't be done while smoking, because I was in shape and still smoked, but it makes it a LOT harder.

I can give you a little bit of advice that helped me. It is in reference to this book: Amazon.com: Fat That Doesn't Come Back: Your Guide To A Lifestyle That Releases Body Fat And Creates Health Daily: Robert Ferguson, Krista Clarke: Books

So i started learning how to fight a few years back. At the time I was 227 lbs of pure fat, not even the slightest bit of muscle on me. After three weeks of training every day 2x a day I went and stood on the scale and it said, 227.5. I had gotten heavier! I looked the same as well, not an inch lost off my belt. I went to my boxing instructor and told him what was going on and he insisted that i didnt know how to eat correctly. I went and picked up the aforementioned book from his place and started reading.

Essentially, it told me that I needed to change my eating lifestyle, know how to read labels, and how to structure my meals daily. I started all of this in march and by the end of the summer I was in tip top shape. I really think that an effective combination of working out and eating is the best way to stay in shape for the long term. Anyone who tells you to do a fad diet punch them in the jeans.

note: I got really really fat (ballooned up to 250) after i stopped training. That weight stayed on me for like 2 years, but now it is coming off again (down to 210) because once you have learned the basics all it takes is enforcing them again and you are set.

    tl;dr jews did 9/11

What do you runners do to prevent from losing your muscle?

What muscle? There are a lot of them.

If you are talking about upper body, most runners I know swim or cross train.

I think the only time you really start drastically losing muscle is when your mileage is really high.

Most runners I know usually keep their whole body in shape seeing how they change their lifestyle after they see the benefits.

I am 6'6" and can weigh anywhere from 185 to 225, I noticed some muscle loss when I was 185 but it wasn't anything drastic.

Nothing they can do, if you're wanting to preserve your muscle do intervals or windsprints or some crap like that.

Swimming sounds great, I might have to go ahead and take that up. Yes, I know the lower body gets very muscular while running; however, the upper body on some runners is somewhat lacking. You know the ladies (and by ladies i mean the sluts in the club) need something to look at from the waist ya know what i mean?

edit: 6'6 wtf tall guy, play basketball?

If you are talking about chest/abs/shoulders. You can do simple workouts such as modified crunches and push ups for looks. Also shoulder work outs are pretty easy and usually get very nice returns if you are consistent with it. I am really only about practical muscles though, not really into show unless it is for a Halloween costume. I think I might do Sagat this year, so I need to work on those superficial muscles.

I played basketball since I could walk really, could of played college BBall but decided not to. Rather have a life than wake up every morning to go to practice and sleep all through classes.

If you want to get into swimming as a supplement to running you can take the advice of the swimming in my favorite book:

Amazon.com: Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary FIRST Training Program (Runners World): Bill Pierce, Scott Murr, Ray Moss: Books

Or if you are in college or near a Y or something, take some classes. I took a college course called Fitness Swimming and it was 1 hour course and learned a lot from it. Proper form helps a whole lot. Also if you are serious about swimming, get some jumper speedos and a nice pair of goggles. My recommendation would be Vanquisher's, you can find them at most sports stores.

    God's Country Marathon
    2009-06-06 Galeton , PA

    Erie Marathon at Presque Isle
    2009-09-13 Erie, PA

    Greater Johnstown YMCA Marathon
    2009-10-04 Johnstown, PA

    Steamtown Marathon
    2009-10-11 Forest City, PA

    Philadelphia Marathon

If I were you I would aim for the October Marathons if you are interested in them. Perfect weather generally, might be a little colder up in Philly but when I ran the Marine Corp in DC it was pretty good running weather.

I was there last year bitch!

I think I am going to run that every year, was a lot of fun up there.

And yes, there are a lot of bitches at marathons. It is especially nice if you like the more toned and in shape women. Or the 60+ crowd, Tyche was running with a boner for the 7 miles I ran with him.
