I had a friend who was given a whole week to test. Idiot kept smoking up until the night before. He kept saying "I'm gonna quit tonight," every single day that week. But he wasn't addicted to pot. Honest! Not surprisingly, he failed, but at least he managed to spend $60 on mouthwash that would supposedly prevent the swab test from coming back positive. And nope, he didn't get his money back.

He is the clearest example I've ever seen that pot can be addictive to the right person, although I believe it's more of a psychological addiction than a physical one.

I hear you. I used to be a compulsive daily pothead. Quit for two months and now I only smoke on weekends, which at one point I would never have believed myself capable of. But I guess that's the difference between pot and say, meth. How many ex-meth-addicts do you know that can only smoke meth on weekends and not end up going overboard?

I've been on Suboxone for a while now, prescribed by my psychiatrist for opiate addiction treatment. I'm pretty sure Suboxone is one of the things they test for in standard employment drug screenings so I'm wondering, if I test positive, what the ramifications would be for my employment. Would it be legal for a workplace to bar me for seeking addiction treatment? Can they bar you if you have a valid script? Do I have to explain myself etc?

I guess it kinda worries me that a job could see the presence of suboxone as past history of abuse of other drugs and decide not to hire me.

Once you are taking a medication like that, you should inform the HR department about it. If you do take a drug test, remind them again that you are taking that medication.

Yeah, I'm no expert, but I highly doubt there is any legal basis for any sort of punitive action being taken against you. I disagree on warning HR pre-emptively, though. I'd rather defend myself once it happens than let my employer know that I'm an ex-drug-addict. If anything, I'd wait until they asked me to take a drug test and tell them before I took it, and ask them what kind of evidence they would need to back up my claims, being as polite as possible about it. But it's up to you, you know your own employer and your HR department better than I do.

I don't think drug testing is as prominent in Canada.. do you usually get fired if you test positive?

Actually in Canada they cannot make you take a drug test unless the drug directly effects your ability to do your job. Ie. truck drivers and blood alcohol. Outside of that companies cannot make you take one, because apparently it discriminates against people who are dependent on drugs or alcohol.

You need to check your employee handbook and talk to your HR rep just in case. Don't say what it's for, but do it to cover your bases. I don't think they can legally test you with out written notice within 24 hours. If they try to bust you, you do get a second chance by pissing again, but you can argue about the 24 hour policy since it's an illegal search and seizure.
It might also have just been a formality just to say they "tested" everyone since you say they're looking for a specific person. Drug testing is fucking expensive and half the time, they don't test trusted employees but make you piss anyway. If you haven't heard anything by now, you should probably be in the clear, get some beer and chill out.

Yeah I'm figuring the same. The employee handbook says that they can random anytime if they have cause. The cause was a moron talking about buying super coke from a vendor that delivers here. Someone overheard and reported, so the WHOLE department got tested. The handbook also says the if you do fail, you will be givin a chance to explain the results before any action is taken.

Just because you tested positive doesn't mean you're getting fired. Often times something like that will just sit in your file for years until they need to lay you off. Fortunately for them, they don't have to worry about paying you pension, since they can fire you for the test results instead of laying you off

tl;dr: If you want to be sure you're going to keep your job at a place that tests, DON'T DO DRUGS. Otherwise, you're always taking a risk.

That was in my employee handbook at the hospital. Unless they have reasonable suspicion that you personally are using, they can't put you on the spot like that. It's supposed to be for people who are on meds that may show up on their test, but everyone can exploit the rule. It may be different at other companies though. But hospitals are getting progressively more strict about tobacco use since the no smoking policy in VA, so they don't really stay on top of drug tests outside of your initial drug screening before general orientation.

Rules are different everywhere. For the most part it is ludicrous to give people a notice, you know it cost the company money to do these so it would be a waste of money to let people cheat on em. We give like three hours and that is more then reasonable.

Probably just a VA state law or a municipal law. Supreme court has ruled on several cases like that and has stated that it's your right not to take the drug test, but since you are voluntarily employed you'll likely suffer the same consequences as a fail.

I got surprise Retested today. They didnt tell me why I had to retest. I luckily had a package of Certo in my pocket. I drank that with a Vitamin water and then drank 2 bottles of water before the test. I also lucked out, the test site was busy and I didnt take my test for 2 hours. Hopefully that gave the Certo enough time to work. I still have not smoked since that last time too. Now I'm nervous again. Fucking retarded drug testing.
