Yeah, but remember, the entire timeline up to Kirk's birth and beyond has been (from our perspective) completely rewritten. Spock kinda confirms this when he mentions that in the other timeline, Jim's dad lives to see him become Captain. So we have to assume at this point than anything and everything is subject to change.

I'm trying to figure out from what part of the future Old Spock would be from. I'm figuring from the date he gives (120 years), that would have to be from the post Dominion War era. Could be after the massive Borg invasion from the recent novels as well, but I'm not sure.

I do wish they hadn't blown up Vulcan, I like Vulcans. Maybe they'll keep around Vulcans and explain it away with Vulcan colonies? they had been running around in space for a while before us after all. Or maybe they'll just blow it all on "alternate timeline"

    Here's to the next 43 years :D

rottentomatoes is at it's finest w/movies like these. I love the random reviewer trolling and leaving a horrible review that doesn't make sense, nor written w/ proper English... then looking at the massive comments bashing the guy lol

i suppose but we are really going out on a limb talking about some bald dude that had no dialog in a movie about TOS so its all kinda moot i think

Wow, woooow, simply amazing movie, A+ would see again.
As long as you have some knowledge (aka, know some of the corny lines, seen a show or two in passing) of StarTrek youre fine and will enjoy it more so than not knowing anything. However even if you know nothing it's still an awesome flick.

The first time I walked out of a movie in that state of Euphoria was after seeing The Dark Knight in Imax. Holy god damn crap was that good, and seeing it put TNG movies into perspective. Damn.

    Edit: Impressions!

Really, really big spoilers after this text. If you have not seen the movie and are planning to and are a star trek fan do yourself a favor and click back you stupid fuck before you ruin this awesome movie for yourself.

    I warned you.

    Spoiler: show

So I wasn't doing much thinking during the movie, I was trying to watch as much as I could. There is a LOT this movie does Visually.

The movie itself did an amazing job at conveying a blend of the 'pre-ultra tech' days of TNG with the days of hand cranked warp cores from Enterprise. It also did a fantastic job of not only poking fun at the original series (The red shirt being gung ho and killing himself) but also using TOS as a batting wall for concepts. Instead of saying 'no, this is a different timeline so the people are different' they said 'This is a different time line with the exact same people', meaning we can get new stories. Which is a present that star trek fans have been waiting to get for a long, long time.

The story made sense with the few irregularities being easy to ignore, the actors did an outstanding job and the ending put everything where it should be without coming across as forced. After having Insurrection and Nemisis, just that sentence alone is enough for me to want to suck off J.J. Abrams as thanks.

Other silly thoughts that are raaaaaaaaant:
    Spoiler: show

There was a lot of death in the start of the movie. Not that 6 billion people getting sucked into nothing isn't a lot.

But in the start of the movie there's an Ensign running down a corridor, as the corridor is hit further behind her and breached the camera follows her being sucked out and bouncing off the god damn phasers. That was kind of hard to watch; Star Trek hasn't been about the horrible space deaths before. Ok, so it's always had horrible space deaths, but never in the show has someone bounced off part of the ship after being sucked outside like the propeller guy in Titanic.

I'm not bitching about that by the way, it was just unexpected.

The entire fleet being destroyed just before the Enterprise arrived at Vulcan also caught me off gaurd. There have been fleet battles(Sorry, Massacres) before in the series, but not in the movies. The escalating loss of Life in the movie was very nicely done, though I wasn't freaking out when Vulcan imploded like I was seeing one person bounce off a turret.

Stupid nerd stuff involving what the plot of this movie has on the effect of the 'alternate' future:
    Spoiler: show

The destruction of Vulcan means that this series "Future", ala TNG / DS9 / Voyager is out of the picture. That was the biggest shock to me of the whole movie: They destroyed Vulcan. That seriously messes the fuck up with the established future. I cant believe it but here I am pulling out reference books a friend left me now, along side Wikipedia.

So TOS started in aprox 2266, meaning that yes Future Spock came from a time after TNG, DS9, and all the Borg movies. That makes him the Deus Ex Machina for a lot of things if this ever turns into a series. But whatever, not the point. (Of this)

Back to Vulcan. Enterprise established that they where instrumental in the setup of the Federation. By TOS humans were likely considered 'Second Class' by Vulcan's, as evidenced by Spocks treatment. Vulcan society had begun to shun this racism (outwardly, at least) and by TNG had all but abandoned that outward Xenophobia towards other races.

This creates something very interesting to me: What will the remaining Vulcans, as they are, do now? They're still very much the self righteous, xenophobic race that they where in Enterprise, and now the few that are left are that way because of an event that wont happen for over a century.

Also the lack of Vulcans creates somewhat of a technological handicap to the Federation, while at the same time the presence of Future Spock .... outbalances it? Like I said before, Future spock staying around creates something like a Paradox: He could advance civilization by years, and by every right knowing what the future holds with the Dominion and Borg may very well start. But will we see it?

LOVED IT!!! Great blend of action, and kept true to the campyness that made the original series so endearing and funny.

Red Shirt Guy...bless him...totally saw that coming a mile away!!!

Ok, so I did a bit more checking, Old Spock mentions in the film that he comes from 2387, which is more or less the current year in ST Canon per the recent novels and such. Then I came about this little bit...

Countdown, Number One - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki

It's a 4-part trade paperback series that explains Nero's origins in great detail, and ties it into the TNG timeline from that perspective.

I went with a bunch of my friends to see it last night; was fucking awesome. I haven't watched anything Star Trek in over a decade; I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid but I kinda fell out of it. Hoping to take my step dad back to see it soon.
