The information was from Memory Alpha.

On 30 March 2009, it was announced that Paramount was moving forward with a sequel to Star Trek. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have again been hired to write the screenplay, along with the first film's producer, Damon Lindelof. J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk will again be producing via Bad Robot, along with Orci and Kurtzman.

On wiki, it says that JJ already signed on to produce, the only uncertainty is that whether he will direct. The sequel aims for a 2011 release day.

This on IMAX was crystal clear and a visual feast, can't wait for the bluray release.

    You mean 1000 METERS AWAY!
    also Nimoy related
    Spoiler: show
I expect him (Spock Alpha) to be in the second one, perhaps briefly, and end up either dead or transported back to Universe Alpha as his continuing presence in Universe Beta could have some serious repercussions. Or he could just be an ambassador helping the remaining Wulcans put aside their racism and xenophobia, without revealing 120 odd years of new tech.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Went to see this last night, and loved it. Was great considering I never liked Star Trek (too much talking, not enough action). Also question for trekkies:

    Spoiler: show
Is the "first universe" really the way they met up in the show? i.e. Kirk's father not dying and Vulcan not getting destroyed? If so Abrams did the most brilliant move with this show. He basically made it that they can do w/e the hell they want in future sequels and it's ok, because it's the altered universe. Technically then keeping it Cannon (even if hardcore fans won't like it)

They meet in the academy, Kirk's father lives until he gets pretty old, Vulcan is one of the core planets of the federation, lots of the storyline in several of the shows deal with Vulcan, Vulcan is also the subject of several books, and is in the canon storyline in the books taking place hit pretty hard by the Borg. So yes, it was a pretty clever move.

My fiance and I saw it last night. Amazing. Loved it. Going to go see it again next weekend.

One of the trailers was 'G.I. Joe'. I didn't recognise what it was til they showed the title. The entire theatre groaned.

Saw it last night and absolutely loved it, every bit.

And yes, this is how you reboot a series without saying "fuck you" to the original! Brilliant work. I'm going to see it again at IMAX next weekend. First movie I've seen twice in theaters in years.

Saw it today and I really enjoyed it.

It felt like it was done right and didn't bastardize the series.

    fun fact

And there seem to be no big Star Trek fans here

If by get what you refer to how Pike was the captain in the pilot episode and in menagerie then yes I get that. My point was that I was not aware he was in Enterprise as i have seen maybe three eps

Ohmigod! I loved Robotech growing up! I spent weeks and weeks downloading the whole series, I think off Napster but I can't remember. Every now and then I watch it.

I don't think it would work as a movie though, I think a live action TV series would be pretty awesome though.

This year is pretty hot for action movies.

Pretty much this. My father and I are fans of the older show and I got my girlfriend to come along while we dorked out and watched it. I gotta say that the movie exceeded my expectations and I was glad that it wasn't just another reboot. The explanation was plausible and the ideas were believable.

This is how Star Wars should have handled itself. I think this is why Star Trek had always been the better of the two [/trekwars].

Yeah, I think it was pretty brilliant the whole way that they actually explain it, almost to appease the hardcore trekkies that this movie isn't saying none of the original storyline existed. However, I don't think it would have been inappropriate to have the Enterprise get sucked into the black hole that's formed when the Romulan ship gets destroyed and have them sent to the original universe where the Romulan ship never had appeared, kirk's dad is still alive, Vulcan is still around, etc.
