Yeah, I think it was pretty brilliant the whole way that they actually explain it, almost to appease the hardcore trekkies that this movie isn't saying none of the original storyline existed. However, I don't think it would have been inappropriate to have the Enterprise get sucked into the black hole that's formed when the Romulan ship gets destroyed and have them sent to the original universe where the Romulan ship never had appeared, kirk's dad is still alive, Vulcan is still around, etc.

Yes, but if that had occurred, then there would be no motivation for the story to move forward. Spock's development would be cancelled out and things would have continued on the same as before. There's also the little tidbit that two sets of characters would exist in that universe.

They did this the good way. By crossing Spock from the original universe over to the new alternate universe, it's symbolically passing the torch on to these new guys (whose entire lives were altered by one moment - Kirk's father dying) who can now go on a completely different set of adventures. It keeps it canon, because as the old show has shown, there are hundreds of alternate universes out there to visit.

I loved it. I thought the similarities and differences were great all at once... plus the writing was good enough and consistent enough to where I never felt like I was watching a remake. I was watching a Star Trek movie. That's something a lot of these movies have forgotten... with Superman Returns, Star Wars Prequels, and other remakes, I didn't feel like I was watching a new story from that universe... I felt like I was watching a glorified (bastardized) version of the old ones.

When I watch a movie like I just watched Star Trek, I want to watch something and be able to appreciate it both as a part of the continuity (or alternate continuity) and as a stand-alone film. No remake I've seen so far has accomplished that for me. I hope that when they do the sequel they don't get sequelitis. This has amazing potential to launch tons of sequels in the vein of the old trek movies if they don't get full of themselves and keep all the actors (who, again, don't get full of themselves and ask for more money).

Just got back from the movie. It was absolutely fantastic and I wholly agree it was brilliant way to restart the movie franchise without it being too awkward. JJ Abrams is the man.

Welp, getting ready to leave to go see it at a regular theater. That pisses me off. So accustomed to seeing the awesome flicks at the imax. Never seen an episode of star trek in my life, hope i still find it entertaining.

Awesome movie, but only 2 gripes:

1. No super nova, no matter how big the star, ever threatens an entire galaxy.
2. No, you dont become captain of a ship, or XO, or anything close, right out of officer school. Even if you save the planet, all you get is a medal, and sent back to your entry level job.

I drove 3.5 hours to see it on imax last night and was anything but disappointed, an old lady even fell over the back seat and had to be taken out by paramedics. Looked beautiful, I've watched maybe 3 episodes of Star Trek in my life and even I appreciated how well it tied into the few things I knew about. Movie of the year candidate imo.

Thats the only thing that I can't go 'fuck it' about. I know WHY they did it (to get the original crew in there places) but it doesnt fit with reality. Its going to be one of those 'shut up and enjoy the movie' bits in the future, but you're absolutely correct, no amount of Universe saving gets you the Captains seat of the Flagship right out of officer school.

Having seen it twice I can tell you this: It seems silly the first time, the second time you don't care. Its just clear that this is the new crew, ignore the couple of really big logic holes and you'll have fun *wink wink*

If anything my only complaint about the movie after seeing it a second time and letting my thoughts brew is that it moved to fast. Theres not room for extraplolation, and while I liked how Star Trek was paced I hope the next movie combines the actoin with a bit more plot.

Is that black guy at the end... Tiger Woods?! At the very end, when Kirk walks onto the bridge with his brownish shirt, and you see all the familiar faces.. there's a black guy, chillin on the bridge. Was it?

Rather shocked that this movie beat The Dark Knight. I expected it to be big and all, but I guess since I myself wasn't to hyped I didn't think it would end up the way it did. Wtg.

I kind of wish they didnt skip the 3 years of boot camp though, there could have been a lot of fun stuff there.

I really can't say that I'm surprised. While there are generations of dorks who read Batman comics and whatnot, the sheer amount of people who sat at watched Kirk, Spock and the gang outnumber the Batmaniacs by a metric buttload.

Either way, congrats to them, and please, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease give me a sequel.

Oh yeah. Best laugh of the movie ever for me = the vulcan grip on Jim. That and kicking him off the ship, lol.

It was a very low turn out over here. When I went to buy tickets 15mins in advanced I asked worriedly if the show was sold out, the girl laughed an said no lol. We get in the theater and theres like 30 people and only a few more show up >.x

I loved the movie, but I didn't love the ticket prices for Imax. Fucking $16! My friend and I looked at each other almost in disbelief. Still though, it was worth every penny. There were so many good parts in the movie, I can't even put a top 5, the whole thing was kick ass.

Wow, Trixi. I bought my tickets about 30 minutes in advance, but by the time it started, nearly every seat was filled. We even had our fair share of trekkies in the room, complete with star fleet uniforms with communicators, vulcan/romulan ears, and even a few klingon masks.
