I was surprised at how much action there was in this movie, to the point where it felt more like a Star Wars movie than Star Trek. I was brought up on the original Star Trek movies where it was a lot of dialogue and character development and practically no action scenes or space battles. Of course with the advent of technology in movies you can do a lot more cool action/space sequences, but yeah. I loved the movie myself.

I am sort of a black hole aficionado, and I know the movie is fiction and all but... good lord they massacred the theories of black hole physics. Not only is the idea of things getting sucked into some sort of time portal at the event horizon absolutely absurd, but the idea of an explosion being able to propel a vessel outwards that has already passed the event horizon is beyond ridiculous. Not to mention that due to time dilation (that they sort of referenced earlier) they would never be able to shoot at the Romulan ship while it was getting "sucked in".

Not really a big issue, but it's just sort of a pet peeve...

Yeah, again, I can't get wrapped up in how a movie handles theoretical/quantum physics, it's just sort a pet peeve of mine when movies treat black holes as something that you can get sucked into ala quicksand when that's not how they operate at all.

But yeah, anyway! Movie was great, Nemoy's role alone was worth the price of admission.

just got back from seeing this; was better than I was expecting. I agree that it felt more Star Wars (scotty's midget buddy, the kid kirk stuff, etc)/Galactica (gritty looking futuristic designs, low/harsh lighting, shaky camera action sequences) than vintage Trek, and I thought Kirk was a little weak (he was just generic good-looking guy you'd expect in a forgettable summer flick), but the rest of the cast was spot on and the story was fairly interesting. The supporting cast made that movie- Spock, Sulu, Bones, Chekhov, Scotty, even Ohura. I liked opening sequence a lot too, pretty heart-wrenching for a popcorn flick.

Watched this over the weekend and fuck me it was brilliant..
My single and only peeve is Bones`s accent oh wow it sucked so much, i cringed everytime he started to speak.

I've seen a lot of TOS, probably every episode of TNG, about half of DS9, 1/3 of Voyager and about 1/10 of Enterprise, all the Star Wars movies, and despite all the negatives other posters listed above (a bit Star-Wars-ian, new Kirk's way too fast promotion/forgetableness, Bones' voice, Sulu's blandness, I didn't even notice the tribble, bad physics, illogical-ness of letting old Spock meet new Spock, lack of character development except the Kirk/Spock storylines), I loved this movie and my gf who's "Star Wars onry!" loved it too.

I had purposely avoided as much publicity for this for as long as possible, going so far as to change the channel when I saw commercials for it on tv, so I didn't know what I was going to get. I was expecting a real prequel that explained more about how the original crew came to be on the Enterprise beyond the TOS pilot/1st episode (which since I never saw those two, I was really looking forward to. So I was picking up my jaw through most of the movie trying to figure out was this just going to be alternate reality reboot or tied back to TOS in any way. I think I actually enjoyed not knowing that all the way to the end.

I remember reading somewhere J.J. Abrams wanted to make this a Star Trek movie that anyone could see, that wasn't necessarily a fan of the series. Spicing it up with action I think helped make many who didn't like Star Trek, like this movie.

I think JJ made the right call. If people want to see a monologue of diplomatic parleys they would have watched Cspan.

exaclty. Honestly, the only reason I could never get into star trek (though I wanted to since most of my friends were trek fans) was it just seemed like a glorified scifi soap opera to me.

I did enjoy some of the original series episodes though, they tended to have a little more humor in them.

Just got back from seeing it, needed a break between studying for finals. I have to say, as someone who only has a vague awareness of the Trek universe (I was only really into TNG, sporadically) that I was really impressed.

Can't wait for the sequel, I could sit through hours of a movie like this.

The only disappointment I had in this movie was when they go to the training academy and the next thing you see is "Three years later." I at least wanted a montage or something.

In all honestly, I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was enjoyable and had mass appeal as well. (i lol'd at the "What training have you had?" "..Fencing" lol)

Ok so I just saw Star Trek, and having seen the older movies multiple times, I recognized a line in the movie from one of the older ones.

God that was awesome. My first thought on leaving the theater was "Fuck I want MORE. Lets get this bitch so successful that we not only get a sequel, but a new series."

Also, between Orion women and She-Hulk, I think every nerd wants to bang a green chick.
