Our children will someday see Mexicans stand in business suits and complain about the Hondurans or w/e taking their jobs and having sex with their women.

Most of the Asian friends I had in school used an American name, with their Asian name.
Actually alot of immigrants I've met have adopted an easier American name, whether just for the sake of being 'Americanized', ease their entry into society or just because they wanted to.

This Texas lawmaker. Kind of a dick.
She seems to have an archaic mindset; probably has a fit when she sees interacial couples.

I had a friend in college, here from Holland, whose name was Boudevine... pronounced with an L.

He *CHOSE* to have us call him "Dutchie." Even the other foreign kids, everyone called him Dutchie.

It's really silly to call this racist or whatever, it's something our country has been doing for a few hundred years, she's just asking if they can do it a little more readily.

Hell it might've saved a kid I know his job, his name was Bich pronounced Bick, and he got in a fight and got fired cuz someone saw it on the schedule and goes "who the hell is Bitch?"

(Oh, and, I'd never have suggested Dutchie change his last name, it was Delongen, pronounced exactly as it looks.)

It's racist is because she only targets Asians. Two friends of mine whose names are Esra Karabekirogullari Karahan (Turkish) and Margarita Triadafilidou (Greek), how are they any easier to pronounce? Regardless, this is an incredibly foolish thing to say as an official.

Just because people have been doing it for a long time doesn't make it any less racist. That's a faulty argument.

If this was done outside of a legislative hearing, it wouldn't (or shouldn't) have been an issue. She really just suggested an option that a lot of immigrants already take advantage of...just doing it during a legislative hearing was really the wrong place, as legislating something like that would be absurd. The comment itself though, not absurd...not remotely racist.

She was addressing "Ramey Ko, a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans". She wasn't targeting all Asians just because they're asian. It was a specific answer to Ramey Ko when she said asians where having a hard tiime voting. learn2context.

And instead of 'We'll hire poll workers who can pronounce Chinese surnames' her answer was 'Well we can't just have EVERYONE learn Chinese for you people, just change your names.'

    Tastes pretty racist to me.

Correction, it wasn't just a legislation hearing on chinese voters. If she told the chinese that she'd hire poll workers just for them, then you'd have to appease the other ethnicities and hire poll workers who can pronounce the surnames of 15 different groups. While it may be a good idea, it may be very difficult to actually implement. Maybe further trainig for poll workers would have been the more PC answer.

edit: oh, was he being sarcastic? I wooshed.

Excuse me, but that's how asians names are and sound, it's part of asian culture. How ethnocentric do you have to be that you would ask them to change their names to cover up your ineptitude in pronouncing them? Don't make ambiguous statement that if you won't want to be interrupted as such.

Ethically insensitive and racist are pretty close. This coming from Texas, color me unsurprised.

I wasn't being sarcastic, and the slippery slope argument is dumb. In my last municipal elections they printed out copies of the voter handbook in at least 6 languages. Ohnoes! Look out America! We're creating an informed minority electorate!

Well shit, in Texas we can't have that, why on earth put multilinguals to work, how about all you yeller fellas just change yer names, huh? Then our poll workers won't have to suffer the embarrassment of trying to pronounce all you Changs, Chings, Chens, Wangs, Wens and Xiaobes. Ol' Proud Whitey Election Director Proinsias O'Shaughnessy would sure appreciate it.

The fact that she's so adamantly unapologetic for her stance well after the fact just reinforces the idea that she's a narrow minded twit.

This is not real. It can't be. There is no way it could possibly... oh, Texas. Nevermind.

I think you should learn your logical fallacies. This was a hearing for immigrants, all immigrants. Your statement said they should hire people who can pronounce chinese surnames, which touches on one of many ethnicites. You did get it right in this statement though, in which they'd have to hire people who can correctl pronounce several (like the 6 in the handbook). If you'd have said that the first time, I wouldn't have called you out. You simply said she should say "we'll hire people who know who to pronounce chinese", which would be stupid. She'd need to hire people who can correctly pronounce the surnames of several ethnicities beings this hearing touched on several, and not just chinese. Chinese was just pulled out for the OPs quote.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Some people are missing the overall glaring point of WHO CARES IF SOMEONE CAN'T PRONOUNCE SOMEONE'S LAST NAME. No one ever pronounces my last name correctly, but I don't break a sweat and run out the room if someone stutters on it.

It make make voting a little more "difficult" (zomg ten extra minutes finding you on the address list "oh noes"). But really saying a comment like "please change your name so we don't have to stutter" is retarded and racist, simple as that.

Her answer was an extreme solution, to a minor problem. And she said it directly at the Asians. loltexas.
