One language. One culture. One people. Without these a country will surely die due to disunity. What happened to assimilation?

Most of my fellow chinese classmates have names like: Liz, Samantha, Jenny, Chloe, Dave, Melissa, Stewart, etc. I remember Stewart was absent one day (he was in our group), and the instructor asked us: "Do you guys know what happened to Supanyachotskul?" We were like "who the fuck is that?" Fuck that name lol >_>
Edit: I've asked them if those were their real names. The ones who weren't born here changed them because according to them people here have a "hard time pronouncing their names." For fucks sake, how hard is to pronounce Chun Li, Bruce Lee..? wat.
I think I'm going to change my name to Phook Yu Krakur. Do you understand my name now?
I'm tempted to bust out some asian jokes from Chappelle.
Ultimately she wants to do what white people did to the Native Americans only not as severely.
If white people try the same shit they did to Native Americans in this day and age they (white folks) would be wiped out.
People realized how retarded the idea of wiping out the culture of immigrants is. They realized it before the country was even founded; it's one of the reasons we have 50 states and not one. We have freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of all sorts of crap. These freedoms protect the separate cultures of American residents.
In any case, each generation has its own culture. It's literally impossible to have one singular culture in a country.
Oh yeah, we don't have an official language for our country. And one people is an abstract concept that can mean whatever you want it to mean.
Assimilation as a concept can be taken to all sorts of levels. It's not a black and white "assimilated or not" issue.
lol. Let me guess, immigrants from all over the world have been flocking to America since day one and we sustained ourselves as a multicultural state for these past 200+ years? It's common sense, not Savage talking points. You'll notice that Asians that are not first generation Americans (their family immigrated in 1800s etc) usually have had their names changed.
@Maxx: I'm talking about ethnic culture, usually ethnic culture is preserved through generations or slightly altered.
Exactly, they had the right idea back then due to the feeling of being outsiders in this pretty much white (culture)/english nation. Now though, there is bombardment of "preserve your culture, assimilation is bad", etc. Also, there is less encouragement to assimilate due to tests being printed in other languages etc.
lol. Yes
It is the exact same bullshit that comes from Savage's mouth daily. Fuck it's even on the banner of his MichaelSavage.com - Home of The Savage Nation It's always been multicultural of course not with opposition from anglo-whites. Look at every single major city in the country take Chicago area for example. There is La Villita, Greek town, China town, Little Italy, Devon(south asian), Andersonville(Swedish), Ukrainian Village, Lincoln Village (German), Wicker park (Polonia triangle). Fuck there's even a strong Puerto Rican Neighborhood in the North side.
and thats just Chicago. Every major city you will find the same layout.
New York was pretty much a melting pot of European cultures early on (Italian, German etc). However, as much as they didn't want their old culture to slip away, they still felt an obligation to assimilate hence why you see most whites that have German/Italian/etc ancestry in this country are pretty much American whites in culture.
Once again. We don't have a national language and that was a decision made by our founding fathers for a reason.
Cultural preservation is something that has always been around in different groups.
Native Americans have tried desperately for a long time, even though at this point it seems like a cynical ploy.
Black people had any trace of their culture systematically destroyed.
Jewish people never left their culture completely behind.
Irish people have influenced the culture to have Saint Patrick's Day a widely recognized holiday, among other things. This wouldn't have happened if they assimilated as "well" as you think people should.
New Orleans has been a French haven with its own ethnic influences.
The list goes on. In America, preserving your own culture and influencing the culture of those around you has been around for a long time.
Back in the day, immigrants didn't change their name, it got changed for them.
More like they've just been around a long-ass time and have fewer factors to figure into preventing the kids from wanting to fit into the culture around them. People who are forced to be isolated generally tend to try to figure out why, what makes them different. Often, when it's cultural differences, the different cultures make people more willing to honor their own.
