    Do you haggle when shopping?

I've worked in retail part-time the last two years and deal with hagglers pretty much all day.

They range from people haggling over $1, $10, pennies, and I get a lot of haggling for shit that's on sale below COST price. There's some customers that don't even flinch when I give them some absurd price and occasionally I'll take off a few bucks to make them happy.

I've also noticed this seems to be a cultural thing. I was pretty much told to intentionally hike up the prices when foreigners walked in, so when they would ask for a discount..I'd "drop" the price to what it originally costs and thus I wouldn't lose out on anything and they'd get a "bargain."

Might come off as "lolracist!" but haggling was pretty much customary when I visited India and Pakistan years back.

If I'm in a market, or the goods are slightly damaged or a display model, yeah. Usually won't bother in a big chain.

Yeah, I really don't do it at big stores, unless I know I saw it somewhere else for a lot cheaper, or it was supposed to be on sale.

It was fun to haggle at flea markets though, pretty easy too if you can keep your cool about it.

If it's a car, it would be silly not to haggle. You need time though :<

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

My dad is the master at haggling. It's like his passion.

I however fail at it. XD

My dad is an artist at it, too lol. He does it for everything that is some soft of service, like mechanics and whatnot.

Haggling is normal but in certain places at certain times"

    Flee market: ok
When you're in a foreign country who has a bazaar of some sort on the streets: ok
Trying to shave a couple bucks off of something your buddy is trying to sell you:Ok
Trying to haggle at a mom and pop shop: Acceptable
Trying to haggle from a corporate business or some sort of huge retailer such as GameStop, Bestbuy, Target, Wallmart etc..: NOT OK

I hate it when people try to haggle at places like that. I mean those prices are more or less set in stone unless they have a clearance sale. I absolutely hate it when people ask me to take a couple bucks off of a game or controller or even worse a console. I've even gotten the "well how about I give you this much under the table and you get me X item" NO unless you have a damn good lawyer and a job offering I will NOT give you a discount or sell under the table that xbox360...

It's rather annoying when people don't know how to haggle either lulz

Walmart normally has low prices. Bestbuy? Won't catch me dead buying anything at their normal prices in there, so I would haggle or get it online.

I mostly buy shit online or in big chains so no reason to haggle, but I'd agree with that policy towards foreigners(not indian/pakistani either) because when my family first immigrated and I was a little kid my dad would haggle on everything. I still can't go into a used car or regular dealership for that matter w/out having bad memories of all the times I'd have to listen to him haggling and if that failed yelling at a car salesman lol. I'd assume he still does it but as my parents have been divorced for awhile I haven't gone shopping w/ my dad for 10+ years.

When she was helping me buy my first car though, my mom did the whole car buying routine from the Cosby Show where she purposefully dressed poorer then she normally does, and told me not to mention her profession etc etc to make haggling easier. I definitely think if you are going to haggle on a car you should go that avenue...

Yes, I made sure to talk the lady at the cash register into giving me a discount on my Ralph Lauren polo.

Maybe I just don't shop anywhere where it would even seem reasonable to haggle, but I have never done it.

I will haggle for display models, or if I have an advertisement in-hand from another store stating a cheaper price in bigger stores. In Mexico, I offered 50% asking price and negotiated from there, on everything.

This, you can definitely haggle on anything in any store over say $500, maybe lower. Especially things like big screen TVs when the salesperson you're working with is likely to get commission.

I wouldn't be caught dead haggling in a store like BestBuy / any retailer. Save up more money or don't buy it.

At the most ask for free installation/shipping on large items like a washer/dryer, maybe?

When you've saved up enough cash to buy houses and nice shit like antiques, you'll start to understand.

I hate when people come in and ask for a lower price. And display models they whine about too, no you cannot get that gun at a lower price just because it's on a glass stand, if it's good enough for the display to make you want it then buy it or go to the nearest other gun store and buy it for the higher price they charge.

Assholes need to get the memo that, more often than not, the people working in the retail chain you're trying to haggle with do not even have the authority to adjust prices.
