Hm just finished Elantris (Brandon Sanderson is by far my favorite new-ish author). Was described to me as magic getting fucked up and making zombie people who can't die, didn't disappoint.

Like many others, also just finished Feast for Crows though I didn't want to since I knew there'd be nothing to read next...yet...

And now, The Orc King by R.A Salvatore. I really should go and read that Robert Jordan series, no idea why I never got around to it.

All She Was Worth (Japanese: Kasha) by Miyuki Miyabe for my Japanese Lit class. It's a really great mystery novel (Japan does so love the mystery genre, look how long Detective Conan has been on)

also, re: paradise lost above, satan is indeed great (especially the speech where he flips out on earth), though on the whole i'd say the book is, cough, the greatest literary achievement in english ._. i'm partial to everything by james joyce, but i think paradise lost is, more or less, a culmination of western literary culture.

Currently reading Neil Stephenson's "The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer". I read "Snow Crash" years ago, and just now getting on to some of Stephenson's other work. Also want to read William Gibson's new one, but need to find time to read outside of a grad school text I have to finish up over the next two weeks.

Just finished Lullaby by Palahniuk yesterday, my first novel of his. Not sure if I'm interested in reading anything else from him, it was a decent book but I dunno. Maybe some time in the future.

Now I'm torn between Dexter Is Delicious or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, though I'm leaning towards the latter to save the Dexter book for after the season is over for extended Dexter-time.

Hilariously enough I was re-reading Diamond Age when you posted this; ended up having a huge discussion about it because I realized that for as good a writer as Stephenson is, he's not a very good storyteller. At all.

I've read most of his stuff, and imo Survivor, Choke, Invisible Monsters are the best. Haunted is decent, too.

I'm trying to tackle the 80 books on the BBC's list of 100 books everyone should read that I haven't.

When I first saw the BBC's list, and their claim that most people will have read only 6 of the books, I thought for sure that they couldn't be right. Then I saw the responses on several peoples FB pages, and sure enough, it seems most of the responses were under 6.

I primarily read sci-fi and fantasy, but my total was 71. I guess it has a lot to do with upbringing. My parents own a large percentage of the books listed. They didn't do the survey, but as often as they read I'll assume they've read the ones they own. My sister's total was 58, and she usually just reads mysteries and harlequin novels. My best friend from the age of 2 had a total of 56.

Other people were just astounded by our numbers. Whereas I'm astounded how anyone, especially mostly college graduates(from our FB list), could have not read many of the books listed. I've always known I read more than most people, but I assumed most people still read somewhat. Several responses I saw where people said they hadn't opened a book since college.

Catching up on various things bit by bit, planning on finishing most of these over winter break once my finals are over:

the themes in both books were quite interesting, but i'm the only person i know who didn't enjoy the writing style.

i'd still recommend both books.

Just finished Dragon Rule, book five of the Age of Fire series. The series is centered around a family of dragons and their various interactions with other races (dwarves, elves, humans, etc). The The first three books are each from the perspective of a different dragon from that family, and then in the 4th and 5th the chapters change perspective between the three. The books are (unfortunately) short. This is probably because the target audience seems to be high school age. However the story is captivating. I've found my self reading through this latest book in 2 days. Normally I'll just read a chapter or two every night, but I couldn't set this one down.

I would like to say that E.E. Knight's style is similar to George R.R. Martin's, however that would be like comparing a candle to the sun. Still there are similarities such as the story revolving around a center family and the chapters changing to different character's perspectives (4th and 5th book). If you're a fan of the Song of Ice and Fire series you'll probably like Age of Fire, although to a less extent.

Next up is the last volume (7 I think) of the Dark Tower series.
