You have to compare it with other FFXI-related content in the past.

We pay $20 or $30 per expansion (CoP, Aht Urghan, etc) and wait 2 years or more to get all the content released. This time, we paid $10 for content that was actually released to completion on Day 1. Speaking for myself, it doesn't bother me. But, I will say that what drove me to get the expansion was the BPs. Not the storyline. If subsequent "min-expansions" have poor rewards I won't bother getting them. This is ok since it looks like you could help other people with the BCs/farming even if you don't do the expansion yourself. So everyone wins.

This model is becoming a standard in MMORPGs these days. I've seen others do it with some success. Whether it be "pay us some money and we just hand you a decent piece of gear" or "pay us some money and we'll entertain you for 8 hours and give you a decent piece of gear" it is just the same. I will say that the total content of THIS mini-expansion for $10 is less than what I've seen other games do for similar money. But, then again, the amount of content released in FFXI expansions is always tiny, especially considering that people still do 5-year-old content.

This "expansion" could have been designed and implemented entirely in a matter of hours by a single person. Barring how convoluted SE's code probably is, I can't imagine it would have taken me personally more than 10 hours.. based on that alone I'd say SE could shit in a box and call it a Sewer Syrup collectible and people would buy it.

We all got taken in by SE's typical lies. The body reward is utterly useless to me, so I'm not even justified in that. The gambling aspect of opening a little chest every day will probably keep me interested for a couple of weeks (as did Chocobo Hot-and-Cold), but I'm sure my patience will wane. It's not that spending 30 minutes to get up to and through Fei'yin is a problem, just that I could watch 30 minutes of porn in that period and probably end up better for it (the shit I've gotten so far from the Tenshodo coffer really demotivates me).

I think it was Sonomaa who said that the timing of this was off, but with regards to Goddess not being completed. I think that the bigger problem is that the timing of this coincided with an update that, though a little disappointing in some respects, is actually fairly decent. The augmentation system is part of the update, both with regards to Fields of Valor and ANNMs. The latter has been a resounding success in my mind, too. We got White Mage updates that are wonderful, critical Summoner fixes, and Red Mage got a rather useful JA. And then there's the quests for the Goddess areas. I honestly wonder sometimes if they're the reason why this expansion has progressed so slowly because a lot of work is put into them. If you've not done something like The Price of Valor, either in terms of the fight itself or simply the cutscenes, you're missing out. Clearly the hired real storytellers for this stuff.

And then we've got Crystalline Prophecy. Except the opening and closing cutscenes, which no doubt actually required a whole two hours of work, it's forgettable (in contrast to much of the rest of the story of FFXI -- except Rise of the Zilart, which was written by the same person as Crystalline Prophecy). The key system of augments would be nice if it was even slightly controllable or, at minimum, didn't toss negative stats at things. Oh, yes, I badly needed a Carapace Gorget with Attack +2, Store TP +1, that really makes me want to go one-shot those Goblin NMs again tomorrow.

Had Crystalline Prophecy been released in February when the shakes were starting to set in for more content, it might have been better received. Pairing it with a pile of "free" content that's actually good, though, is its downfall. The level of writing is pathetic, the challenge ranges from minimal (Delkfutt's climb) to arbitrary (Alexander v.2), and overall the duration is less than most of the involved stories in the game. I am certain I spent more time working on the Star Onion Brigade quests than this and, frankly, was far more interested in their story. There was so much potential here, but it felt like something I'd have written up at 4 AM due in class at 9 AM.

That's what bothers me. His complaints are not completely unfounded, but he just floods the legitimate stuff he says with insane BAWing about things like the security token. Plus, if you disagree with him he goes well out of his way to wave his eDong and try to tackle you with it. I know its a formulated well crafted blend of legitimacy / trolling / QQing, but it still gets annoying.

How the hell is SE supposed to improve when people just bitch about everything? The best way to get his point across would have been to not buy the add-on...

the add-on is meh, 10 bucks for nothing. The missions are easy as hell and short, the body reward is meh for me at least. The random rewards, blurp. There are better quests scattered around Vanadiel that are more fun to read and more cinematic.

Which is exactly how they marketed it..an add-on that was a story focus. Like it or hate it..they pretty much gave us what they said they would..every company overestimates their clients, but if you really get down to it, casual players would take a bit to beat this, because casual players wouldn't be able to plow through this add-on, let alone the final 2 BCs.

I don't mean to be a jerk, or a pain. This is the exact mentality that led everyone to believe that CoP was "not worth it". Then they ended it with a big bang and everyone was "no one does it it's impossible".

I'm sure this mini-scenario is completely different, but .. I agree with him. You really can't say you truly hate it until you've watched, done, and tried to enjoy it all.

Hell for some people, it could be as simple as seeing a goblin holding a small mandragora doll in the very back of the room in cutscene 4 that makes it worth the 10 bux...


Also, I don't see why people read ahead on all of the CS's and challenges, maybe when you don't know what to do sure, but the whole plot? Eh, to each his own I guess . It reminds me of people who hear of a movie release and then read the book so that they can understand the movie better, then get angry when the movie isn't as good as the book. It kinda makes sense, but at the same time, it doesn't.

Farming items off low-level beastmen was a horrific idea, but once you get past that, the missions are not bad at all. Level-cap isn't annoying since level-synch gear was implemented, and it actually makes for a fun walk through Delkfuts - unique scenarios and missions like that are one of FFXI's best suits, not standard MMO fetch-quests. The final BC is also a complete breeze, and hardly what I'd call flawed-design or a lame time-sink. But the add-on is still ridiculous and charging money for it is still garbage, due to a complete lack of substance. It's smaller than crap they've added in previous free content updates, and I have very little hope for the next two add-ons.
