What I said about making a sequel to a perfect game is suppose to be ridiculous. That is because the idea of a perfect game is ridiculous. Videogames are destined to be flawed and always susceptible to improvement. So when someone says something like "Gameplay was perfect for me" they are either saying "The game was perfect" or "I am too stupid to understand a better game than this." It is not likely he meant the latter. How could he even know that?

I thought I was being clear in calling FF series bad. I make this claim based on comparison to other games in its genre. For example: Fire Emblem, Advance Wars. (both conveniently japanese)

++: They said they're not working on the 360 port until the PS3 version is done. So thats not the reason for the delay. If I had to guess, comparing the old E3 trailers to what the game looks like now, I'd say that the games gone through a few 'revisionings' ala FF12.

Lol wow, I'm not really sure how to respond to you BRP.

First of all I disagree on the storyline bit, I read plenty of books and just because it's the storyline of a videogame doesn't mean I can't enjoy it. I haven't beaten every FF but the ones I have played I've always really enjoyed the storyline and thought it was a main component of why I like FF games. As far as gameplay I think you're taking me too literal when you know that almost anytime someone uses the word perfect it isn't meant to be taken literally, that being said I do love the gameplay from 12. Every single piece being exactly how I would want it? No, but if they use that style of gameplay in another game and give it a solid storyline you can be sure I'll be purchasing it.

Since I know BRP is going to pick apart my word choice I'll take back what I said about the gameplay being perfect. It is not, there is flaws in everything, thank the lord we have BRP to point this fact out to us. He naturally is smarter than the rest of us. Despite these flaws, I would purchase any game with a decently solid storyline if it emulated the gameplay from FF12 (Monster Hunts, Gambits, etc.). FF13 doesn't need to be some vast improvement to make people happy, just as the previous ones weren't huge improvements yet people still enjoyed them. If you hate all FF, why are you in this thread?

To the people saying that Lightning looks like a female Cloud, I remember reading an interview somewhere where Nomura says he was asked to make a female Cloud for FFXIII. So yeah, mission complete I guess.

Still, the game has me excited. I won't buy a triple though.

Haven't really ever had a serious deal breaking complaint with any of the main entries (SNES onwards). My expectations, as always, are quite high for this game. As long as it has an interesting story, I'll be fine if I don't particularly like the gameplay. Interactive movies are okay with me.

This is what it comes down to really. Are satisfied with simple things or not? Is throwing a tennis ball into the air and catching it enough for you? Or would you like to play Tennis? This is entirely choice.

The reason I attacked your statement has little to do with what you said exactly, but how you think. This isn't about a game being perfect or flawed, it is about what you think a game is. For example you seem to think gameplay means less than the word "play." You seem to think that the cutscenes in FF are apart of the game, but not the gameplay. What? Are the special effects not apart of the moviewatch?

If you can't grasp what it means to play a game how can you even understand what it means to not play a game? Or the relationship between mechanics and aesthetics? Both of these are extremely important in understanding why Final Fantasy 13 will be a simple game full of mud to cover it up.



Like Kuya says, it is fair to imply FF series never had much of a story.

Now me? I won't even humor the idea of an EPIC STORY in a videogame. It would be like having an epic story in a porno. Playing videogames has more in common with masturbation than they do do with watching/reading movies or novels or whatever medium. To put that into a porno would be to dilute its purpose to give you an orgasm. That is not to say story in porn is a bad thing, but do I really want to talk about what makes a good porno?

If it ever comes to the point where you are establishing story for the sake of story you are going over the minimum and that is always sloppy game design. Setting the stage for the aesthetics and giving motivation for the narrative are all you need to do.

The problem with 12 was I was playing FF11 and WoW at the same time, and after a certain point I realized "Why am I grinding in this console game when I can get more benefits from grinding on those games?"... This will probably happen with FFXIII as well, interesting for a bit, maybe fun, but then something will bother me about it - like can't X amount of characters in the battle at once, or some weird system for learning abilities or weapons (I wonder where my lost odyssey disc is).

FF12 had a good battle system actually. Dragon Quest-ish system is getting really old no matter how much you adjust it.

I'm fairly convinced FFXIII will have less grinding if you play well, I mean, the whole EXP Bonus chain thing that I'm pretty sure people will find ways to exploit.

If you want the same battle system every FF , replay those games but change is fun if it's good change and imo , it's fucking sweet. Music owns , graphics are amazing and a nigger in a FF game with a chick in his hair just owns the place right there.

XII was absolutely horrible, imo, due to both the constant farming/grinding (in an offline game? gtfo with that) and the uninteresting/lack of story. It was always 2-3 hours of running, grinding, farming, then 5-10 minutes of story, then repeat. Didn't care about any of the characters at all. Half of them didn't even have motivation for coming along... Only got about 2/3 of the way through then just quit playing because XI was more fun and other people actually see the results of my hours of work in that.

XIII looks way better, at least. The battle system actually looks to be interactive and story looks to be more interesting... will wait and see and buy it used if it gets good reviews.
