Can we forget everything after halfway through Sonic Adventure 2, until now, never existed? It'd be a much better series then.

At the two places I've interned at (health-centric tv station and computer hardware magazine) the PR thing did pop up. Usually for niche journalism, the stuff you're reviewing is made by the people that buy advertising space on your site/station/magazine. They're also the ones who offer up prizes for contests etc to promote their stuff.

Of course marketing doesn't want a scathing review next to an ad or a contest giving away said product. They're not looking over your shoulder all the time, but it does happen. Ad revenue is a much bigger source of income than what coems in from the readers/viewers, so you can't really bite the hand that feeds you.

On videogames journalism I'm annoyed by the same things as mentioned here pretty much. I hate seeing stuff like "well I didn't play the first two games, but we've been hearing good things about this third installment!" or "normally I don't play fighting games but..."

Also: review scores. What's the point of using a scale from 0-100 if 80% of your scores are between 60 and 90? It also seems like everyone's afraid to not conform with what everyone else is giving a particular title. It's like they go to metacritic, see that a game gets 80-90 from other publications, slap an 84 on it and call it a day. Ridiculous.

It was a good read. Best at start, and I didn't like the end much... Sega isn't exactly dying lol. I liked the start most because all I had to go on during that period was a shitty wikipedia article. Three nitpicks:

    1) No mention of Sagata Sanshiro!?!?!

    2) I don't think Daytona USA was mentioned. That seems like a serious oversight considering it is one of the biggest arcades releases ever. EDIT: Oh it was named. Only in passing and not bolded for some reason.

    3) IGN is a pain in the ass to read. Did they really need to split that up into 11 pages? I guess they want to get ass many ads in as possible.

Sonic isn't even the best thing Sega does. I think that's why they get such a negative wrap these days. He is a bit cancerous.
