PS2 Version discontinued in some states..

in MN, only gamestop carries the PC version and any expansions, even on release day walmart did not have WOTG. ive only seen toys r' us carring the big PS2 version + hdd. big retailers such as walmart and target carry the xbox versions + expansions.

more importantly, does anyone remember back when they released the "trial" installation CD's like wow had which cost $2.95 or so? i don't remember seeing those anywhere in any stores. did anyone see those around?

That really doesn't mean much the PS2 HDD and HDD FFXI bundle I'm pretty sure have been off the market for a while (if they're being sold new it's old stock.) At the moment they still easily could release disc based expansions for PS2 but re-releasing the original game and expansions for PS2? Doubtful based on Sony's decisions with the console. That's actually something that we should be looking at, I wonder if Sony has plans to drop there DNAS support for PS2 after year 10. Either way news from ebgames means very little when it comes to whether or not PS2 is getting dropped.

Shortly after these were released I actually saw them in the Mall of America Gamestop. So at least a few places in MN had them.

You can still buy (brand new) the old style PS2 with network adapter and hard drive as a special set here in Japan for about $250. The PS2 software is easy enough to find, like at Amazon or even from SE directly. All versions are more expensive than back home though. The collection is around $80.

With all the problems Xbox users have had with running FFXI, the PS2 is still being recommended on various sites. I'm thinking of picking up the PS2 set and software to try it out myself....

I always thought it's been discontinued for years.......One of those items that are only released in a certain amount. I preordered the HDD set from gamestop when it came out and bought another from BJ's about 5 months later and havent seen one in the last however many years.

They release a small and short print run of each new expansion for PS2, so you haev to buy it as soon as it comes out. With slim PS2s and PS3s that aren't compatible with PS2 software being the only ones in production, they are only trying to put out sufficient stock to allow the current interested player base on those platforms to get access to the expansions.

2008 Collection for PS2 came out because at the time, PS3 models were in production that were compatible. Once those models went away, the disc went out of print. You didn't need a HDD for that disc if playing on a PS3, so new PS3 users were possible at that time.

Note that the most reliable way to get a PS2 expansion when they release is to order it off the internet. I got my PS2 2008 Collection off of the GameStop web site, since I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find one in a retail store in Alaska. I only needed the disc to install, so I split the cost with a friend that just needed the WotG code. I didn't need the code myself because I have a JP account and also had to buy the JP version for my code. I mainly play on PS2, so it's nice to have an American install disc to fall back on in case my install dies or my PS2 needs replacement.

God, I want to go buy one of those right now. I remember bringing that big box home in 04 with my giant ass logitech keyboard/controller combo, that was amazing in theory but absolutely terrible. Definitely a feeling I'd like to have again when it comes to FFXI. Setting it up and reading the manuals - so much fun!

On topic, here in MI it's very rare to find one where I live, Meijer has one and the gamestop in one of the malls has one - both have been there for years and haven't been sold, not much demand.

Btw, has anyone switched to 360 and stayed there? I bought the 360 version when ToA came out and the frame rate was garbage, so I ended up switching back to PS2.
